This bookpresents fundamental material that should be part of the education of every practicing mathematician. This material will also be of interest to computer scientists, physicists, and engineers. Complex analysis is also known as function theory. In this text we address the theory of complex-valued functions of a single complex variable. This is a prerequisite for the study of many current and rapidlydevelopingareasofmathematics, includingthetheoryofseveral andin?nitely many complex variables, thetheoryofgroups, hyperbolic geometry and three-manifolds, and number theory. Complex analysis has connections and applications to many other many other subjects in mathematics, and also to other sciences as an area where the classic and the modern techniques meet and bene?t from each other. We will try to illustrate this in the applications we give. Because function theory has been used by generations of practicing mathematicians working in a number of di?erent ?elds, the basic - sults have been developed and redeveloped from a number of di?erent perspectives. We are not wedded to any one viewpoint. Rather we will try to exploit the richness of the subject and explain and interpret standard de?nitions and results using the most convenient tools from analysis, geometry, and algebra.

It is gratifying to learn that there is new life in an old field that has been at the center of one's existence for over a quarter of a century. It is particularly pleasing that the subject of Riemann surfaces has attracted the attention of a new generation of mathematicians from (newly) adjacent fields (for example, those interested in hyperbolic manifolds and iterations of rational maps) and young physicists who have been convinced (certainly not by mathematicians) that compact Riemann surfaces may play an important role in their (string) universe. We hope that non-mathematicians as well as mathematicians (working in nearby areas to the central topic of this book) will also learn part of this subject for the sheer beauty and elegance of the material (work of Weierstrass, Jacobi, Riemann, Hilbert, Weyl) and as healthy exposure to the way (some) mathematicians write about mathematics. We had intended a more comprehensive revision, including a fuller treatment of moduli problems and theta functions. Pressure of other commitments would have substantially delayed (by years) the appearance of the book we wanted to produce. We have chosen instead to make a few modest additions and to correct a number of errors. We are grateful to the readers who pointed out some of our mistakes in the first edition; the responsibility for the remaining mistakes carried over from the first edition and for any new ones introduced into the second edition remains with the authors. The book is part biography and part collection of mathematical essays that gives the reader a perspective on the evolution of an interesting mathematical life. It is all about Lipman Bers, a giant in the mathematical world who lived in turbulent and exciting times. It captures the essence of his mathematics, a development and transition from applied mathematics to complex analysis - quasiconformal mappings and moduli of Riemann surfaces - and the essence of his personality, a progression from a young revolutionary refugee to an elder statesman in the world of mathematics and a fighter for global human rights and the end of political torture.The book contains autobiographical material and short reprints of his work. The main content is in the exposition of his research contributions, sometimes with novel points of view, by students, grand-students, and colleagues. The research described was fundamental to the growth of a central part of 20th century mathematics that, now in the 21st century, is in a healthy state with much current interest and activity. The addition of personal recollections, professional tributes, and photographs yields a picture of a man, his personal and professional family, and his time.

Contributions to Analysis: A Collection of Papers Dedicated to Lipman Bers is a compendium of papers provided by Bers, friends, students, colleagues, and professors. These papers deal with Teichmuller spaces, Kleinian groups, theta functions, algebraic geometry. Other papers discuss quasiconformal mappings, function theory, differential equations, and differential topology. One paper discusses the results of the rigidity theorem of Mostow and its generalization by Marden in relation to geometric properties of Kleinian groups of the first kind. These results, obtained by planar methods, are presented in terms of the hyperbolic 3-space language, which is a natural pedestal in approaching the action of the Kleinian groups. Another paper reviews Riemann''s vanishing theorem which solves the Jacobi inversion problem, by relating the vanishing properties of the theta function (particularly at half periods) to properties of certain linear series on the Riemann surface. One paper examines the problem of obtaining relations among the periods of the differentials of first kind on a compact Riemann surface. An application of a computer program involves supersonic transport. The program is based on the hodograph transformation and a method of complex characteristics to calculate profiles that are shock-less at a specified angle of attack, or at a specified subsonic free-stream Mach number. The collection can prove useful for engineers, statisticians, students, and professors in advance mathematics or courses related to aeronautics.
