This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Component-Based Software Engineering, CBSE 2004, held in Edinburgh, UK in May 2004 as an adjunct event to ICSE 2004. The 12 revised long papers and 13 revised short papers presented together with the abstracts of 2 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 82 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on generation and adoptation of component-based systems, tools and building frameworks, components for real-time embedded systems, extra-functional properties of components and component-based systems, and measurement and prediction models for component assemblies.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee I am pleased to present the proceedings of the 2006 Symposium on Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE). CBSE is concerned with the development of software-intensive systems from reusable parts (components), the development of reusable parts, and system maintenance and improvement by means of component replacement and customization. CBSE 2006 was the ninth in a series of events that promote a science and technology foundation for achieving predictable quality in software systems through the use of software component technology and its associated software engineering practices. We were fortunate to have a dedicated Program Committee comprising 27 internationally recognized researchers and industrial practitioners. We received 77 submissions and each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members (four for papers with an author on the Program Committee). The entire reviewing process was supported by Microsoft’s CMT technology. In total, 22 submissions were accepted as full papers and 9 submissions were accepted as short papers. This was the first time CBSE was not held as a co-located event at ICSE. Hence special thanks are due to Ivica Crnkovic for hosting the event. We also wish to thank the ACM Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (SIGSOFT) for their sponsorship of CBSE 2005. The proceedings you now hold were published by Springer and we are grateful for their support. Although the quality of a system’s software architecture is one of the critical factors in its overall quality, the architecture is simply a means to an end, the end being the implemented system. Thus the ultimate measure of the quality of the software architecture lies in the implemented system, in how well it satis?es the system and project requirements and constraints and whether it can be maintained and evolved successfully. In order to treat design as a science rather thananart,weneedtobeabletoaddressthequalityofthesoftwarearchitecture directly, not simply as it is re?ected in the implemented system. Therefore, QoSA is concerned with software architecture quality directly by addressing the problems of: – Designing software architectures of good quality – De?ning, measuring, evaluating architecture quality – Managing architecture quality, tying it upstream to requirements and do- stream to implementation, and preserving architecture quality throughout the lifetime of the system Cross-cutting these problems is the question of the nature of software archit- ture. Software architecture organizes a system, partitioning it into elements and de?ning relationships among the elements. For this we often use multiple views, each with a di?erent organizing principle.
