Ten years ago in August 1977 Malcom Longair and Jan Einasto organized IAU Symposium nO 79 on exactly the same exciting and most important topic i.e. the Large Scale Structure of the Universe. Many of us have the recollection of an outstanding meeting which fulfilled two goals (i) establish most of the foundation of a fast growing field (ii) set up a confrontation between the excellent observational and theoretical work performed in eastern and western countries. A decade after such a meeting Alex Szalay and I have felt the need to reassemble the cosmologists working actively on problems dealing with the Uni­ verse as a whole. Indeed a lot of progress has been achieved in the building of large surveys in the discovery of voids, sponges and filaments in the galaxy clus­ ter distribution, in refined numerical simulations, in experimental and theoretical particle physics (outcome of new particles (cold particles) and unification (GUT, supersymmetry) schemes), in research of quantum gravity and inflation scenarios etc ... A new confrontation between all the specialists working all throughout the world on such questions appeared to us to be most timely. This is why the location of Balatonfiired in Hungary to be accessible to anyone as Tallin in 1977 has been chosen.

The study of the interstellar medium is certainly one of the most recently developed astrophysical topics. Indeed, to understand the physical status of this medium, one should observe it at every wavelength, especially in radio and in the ranges which are only accessible from space such as Infra Red, X and gammas. Thanks to many new observations we now know that interstellar gas is quite inhomogeneous, since it is made from relatively cold and dense phases (interstellar clouds), surrounded by a relatively hot and tenuous medium. The summer school which took place from September 1 to 16 at the Institut d''Etudes Scientifiques of Cargese, and from which this book originates, was devoted to the analysis of this second diffuse, hot and tenuous component. The eleven sets of lectures which were presented at this school constitute the chapters of this book. They review different aspects (observations, determination of the physical properties and evolution) of this diffuse medium. In the first chapter, J. Lequeux (Marseille Observatory) introduces the study of the diffuse interstellar medium which plays a major role in galactic evolution. His contribution provides some historical references on this subject, such as a copious bibliography on the analysis and observations of the interstellar medium.

This book is the third volume belonging to the series of proceedings of the Moriond Astrophysics meetings. I t follows "Cosmology and particles" publi shed in 1981 by les Editions Frontieres and "The birth of the Universe" whioh appeared in 1982 thanks to the same publisher. This workshop took plaoe on llBroh 1983 at La Plagne and as in 1981 and 1982 took advantage of the simultaneous presence of the particle physicists and the astrophysicists. As said in the title of the book the partioipa nts have presented their most recent views on the evolution of large structures and galaxies and the relevance of these questions on particle physics and cosmology. Among the llBny developments which are at the origin of the thirty five papers gathered here, three main themes have been touched on by several speakers during the workshop. They are (i) the influence of the mass of neutrinos and other "inos" predicted by the "Supersymmetry" theories, which are the more likely candidates for the hidden mass of the Universe, (ii) the dynamics of triaxial galaxies and (iii) the possible occurence of pregalactic stars with a debate on their hypothetioal nucleosynthetic role. Miny different views h3. ve been presented on these three topics (and many others) which prove the liveness of the physical cosmology.For the editor it has been quite difficult to find a reasonable and logical order to arrange the oontent of the book.

On behalf of the IAU Commission 48 "High Energy Astrophysics" a special session on "CNO Isotopes in Astrophysics" was held at the General Assembly of IAU in Grenoble on August 30, 1976. This topic was chosen since it has recently included many exciting developments in various domains of physics and astrophysics such as for instance meteoritical studies, radioastronomy measurements of the interstellar gas, new determinations of nuclear reactions cross-sections and fractionation processes. The International Conference "Primordial Nucleosynthesis and Evolution of Early Universe" was held in the presence of Prof. William Fowler on 4 - 8 September 1990 at the Sanjo Conference Hall, the University of Tokyo. This conference was co-sponsored by IUPAP, the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, and by the University of Tokyo. The number of participants was 156, 58 from 15 foreign countries and 98 from Japan. About 120 contributions were submitted orally or as posters. Originally this conference was planned as a small gathering on Primordial Nucleosynthesis as indicated in the title, since primordial nucleosynthesis is the most important probe of the early stage of the universe. As is well known, light element abundances strongly depend on the time evolution of temperature and density. In this sense we can say that primordial nucleosynthesis is both the thermometer and speedometer of the early universe. Moreover, recently it has been claimed that primordial nucleosynthesis is an indicator of inhomogeneity of the early universe too. Now research of the primordial nucleosynthesis is in a boom. We, however, decided to include observational cosmology, of observations. taking into account the recent remarkable results Nowadays, to reveal the large scale structure of the universe and discover its origin is a main subject in cosmology. We invited distinguished scientists from all over the world, and very fortunately almost all these people accepted to attend this conference.
