This is a collection of Japanese senryu poetry—a lesser known cousin to haiku poetry.In 1765 Karai Senryu published a selection of tsukeku that reflected his personal taste and humor. This anthology, Yanagidaru, became widely popular and was followed by 22 more of the same title, also compiled by Senryu, and a further 144 volumes compiled by his successors to the tradition. The type of poems Karai chose eventually came to be known as senryu. They did not require inclusion of a seasonal word, as did haiku, which developed from the introductory portion of linked verse.Although senryu were at first written in only seventeen syllables(in lines of five, seven, and five syllables) or fourteen syllables(in lines of seven and seven), these rules became less strictly adhered to as time passed. The main difference between senryu and haiku is one of tone. The meaning and structure of a haiku can be brilliant, but I personally often find them conventionally serious and sentimental, offering few surprises. One has to be a near genius to write good haiku, but almost anyone can write reasonably good senryu; the form seems somehow to have escaped the structural restrictions that bind and, perhaps, limit haiku.

International Series of Monographs in Electromagnetic Waves, Volume 11: Electromagnetic Wave Theory, Part 1 covers the proceedings of an International Scientific Radio Union (U.R.S.I.) Symposium on Electromagnetic Wave Theory. The book contains 61 chapters that are organized into three sections. The first section presents papers about wave propagation, which includes lateral waves; terrestrial waveguides; and plane waves in dissipative media. Electromagnetic Wave Theory, Part 2 contains the proceedings of a Symposium on Electromagnetic Wave Theory held at Delft, The Netherlands in September 1965. The symposium provided a forum for discussing electromagnetic wave theory and tackled a wide range of topics, from propagation in nonlinear media to electromagnetic wave propagation and amplification in solid-state plasmas. Electromagnetic waves in nonlinear transmission lines with active parameters are also considered, along with the phase dependence of maser active material Q-factor on pump intensity and frequency. Comprised of four sections, this volume begins with an analysis of two modes of propagation that are coupled through parametric modulation in nonlinear media. The discussion then turns to symmetry restrictions in nonlinear, non-absorbing, non-dispersive media; nonlinear interaction between two beams of plane electromagnetic waves in an anisotropic medium; radiation in periodically non-stationary media; and electromagnetic wave propagation in time-varying media. Subsequent chapters explore the diffraction of electromagnetic waves by plasma structures; resonant electromagnetic scattering from gyrotropic plasmas; scattering and transmission of electromagnetic waves at a statistically rough boundary between two dielectric media; and developments in wavefront reconstruction. This book will be useful for students, practitioners, and researchers in physics.

Dr. Raymond Pederson, Dr. Jill Dryburgh and I commenced work on GIP in 1968, when, with the generous help of Professor Viktor Mutt and Professor Erik Jorpes of the Karolinska Inst,itute, Stockholm, we were able to establish that there existed an inhibitory material for acid secretion in cholecystokinin-pancreozymin prepara tions. Once the physiological evidence for the inhibitor was established it seemed appropriate to seek help in its isolation. Dr. J. Dryburgh and Dr. R. Pederson were left to bioassay fractions in Vancouver whilst I enjoyed the company of Professor Mutt at the Karolinska for one year, as a Medical Research Council of Canada Visiting Scientist. Purification of the inhibitory factor proceeded rapidly due, in no small measure, to Professor Mutt''s untirmg efforts on my behalf. Later that year, Dr. Dryburgh joined us in Stockholm to begin the sequence work on GIP. This was completed late in 1970 in Vancouver. In Stockholm in June 1970, I met a fellow Canadian Dr. John Dupre (McGill University) at a cocktail party who kept commenting about the possibility of GIP being an insulinotropic hormone, the "incretin" of earlier days. At that time, gastrointestinal physiologist as I was, I did not recognize the importance of his comment. This became apparent two or three years later when Dr. Dupre demonstrated that GIP was insulinotropic in man. In 1972, Maryanne Kuzio and Dr.
