This collection sets out how a gendered approach to political economy can help us understand the inherently gendered structures that characterise our society, and provide the foundation for a truly interdisciplinary social science. It provides a comprehensive coverage of gendered political economy - what it is, where it is and, perhaps more importantly, how it should develop. The twelve chapters that make up this volume combine the development of a theoretical framework with empirical examples, which illustrate the core concerns of gendered political economy.

The authors examine the relationship between social science and philosophy and ask what sort of work social science and an accompanying philosophy should do. They reintroduce the question of ontology, through the work of Roy Bhaskar. The book argues against philosophising and is committed to a philosophical approach grounded in the social sciences.

The Aesthetics of Free Speech: Rethinking the Public Sphere is one of the first books to theoretically explore the relationship between free speech and the public sphere. By drawing upon Marxist theory the author, John Michael Roberts, demonstrates how liberal theorists frequently construct an abstract aesthetic of ''rational'', ''cultivated'' and ''competent'' discussion which then serves as a norm through which certain utterances can be humiliated and excluded from participating fully within the public sphere. However, the author also shows how excluded utterances develop their own aesthetic of free speech and how this aesthetic then comes back to haunt the bourgeois public sphere.
