Media are objects with content and character that we describe using in-phrases: in the story, in the picture, in the movie, in the dream...Like the propositional attitudes, these objects present a variety of hard problems for semantic and philosophical analysis. This text presents an organized exploration of fundamental questions in the semantics of media. The first three chapters set out a straightforward model within the possible-worlds framework, and consider how it might account for a range of notions applying to media generally: implicit vs. explicit content, propositional vs. individual content, causal vs. intentional content and the idea of a single World of the Medium. The final three chapters examine ways of elaborating the model to cover a range of phenomena keyed to the functionality of particular forms of media. Chapter Four is a discussion of fiction and our apparent reference to fictional characters. Chapter Five deals with the phenomenon of viewpoint in pictorial media. Chapter Six is a study of interactions between users and characters of media centering on the puzzling case of seeing in films.

Old Lesbians and their Brief Moments of Fame: An Anthology From many parts of the USA, and from various walks of life, we are all old lesbians who want to tell our stories. Some of us have been lesbians all of our lives, and others later came out later in life. Many of our contributors thanked us for inviting them to tell their stories. We asked each woman to introduce herself, and select one moment in her life that stands out as her Brief Moment of Fame (their own definition of fame). Why did we call ourselves Old lesbians and not older lesbians? We debated this for a while since some women in their 50s and 60s considered themselves either middle aged or older, but not old. They still fear the word old. Ageism is another word added to the list that identifies hurt, fear, and discrimination. Sexism still holds power in Americas patriarchal society. Sexual orientation is on the bottom of the list. The history of our past still reaches out to culturally bind us as women earning less than me, nurturing children alone, and tending the home. However, within this list, we are feminists, lesbians, and now finally old. We are the many who have found our way, recognized who we are, and will celebrate our lives. We took charge of our lives, and embrace Old as a virtue of earned respect as we continue this celebration. We believe our country, too, will learn to respect Old by taking pride in our experience, knowledge, and especially our equal humanity. Some of our stories touch on historical movements of the past 50 or 60 years in which lesbians have been involved: the anti-war movement, gay rights, AIDS care and awareness, lesbian voices, (gay authors, gay newspapers, and bookstores). Now we have civil unions, marriages, lesbians in sports, and lesbian musicians, etc, etc. There are obviously many more old lesbians out there with stories to tell. Maybe some of them will want to contribute to Volume 2. We hope you enjoy reading these colorful and varied stories as much as we did.

Stress-induced myocardial ischemia is a frequent manifestation of coronary heart disease, and sympathetic activation is an important precipitating and aggravating factor in such stress- induced ischemia. However, the complex interplay between the sympathetic initiation of myocardial ischemia, ischemia-induced alterations in sympathetic neurotransmission, as well as changes in adrenoceptor density and post-receptor signal transduction that can occur during ischemia remains incompletely understood. Not only the activation of myocardial fJ- adrenoceptors, but also the activation of coronary IX-adrenoceptors can contribute to myocar- dial ischemia. However, the role of fJ-adrenoceptor-mediated increases in contractility relative to heart rate in the initiation of ischemia is not clear, and the significance of IX-adrenoceptor- mediated changes in coronary vasomotor tone, as well as the responsible IX-adrenoceptor subtypes are highly controversial. Malignant arrhythmias may be triggered by both IX- and fJ-adrenergic mechanisms.Current research in this field is focussed not only on the underlying physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms, but also on clinical treatment strategies, e. g. , by fJ-blockade, IX-blockade, bradycardic agents and calcium antagonists. Recent findings were presented and future research directions discussed during the 61" International Titisee Conference, held at the Schwarzwald-Hotel, Titisee, March 29-31, 1990 under the sponsorship of the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation. That part of it which arrives as a beam of parallel rays is referred to as direct solar radiation, and that which is scattered in the atmosphere and reaches the earth's surface from all directions of the sky is called diffuse solar radiation. Both of them are reflected back into the atmosphere when they reach the earth's surface, and this third type of radiation is defined as reflected radiation. All of these radiations differ from solar radiation arriving at the upper level of the atmosphere in intensity as well as in spectral composition although they all fall within the spectral region of solar radiation. In atmospheric physics these types of radiation are known as short-wave radiation (SWR) as distinguished from long-wave or irifrared radiation (L WR) emitted by the atmosphere and the earth's surface.
