Wie verhält sich der Wahrheitsanspruch der Christusbotschaft zum biblischen Zeugnis von der Erwählung des jüdischen Volkes? Das Interesse an der Septuaginta ist größer denn je, vor allem weil viele bedeutende Übersetzungen und Kommentare auf Deutsch, Französisch, Englisch und Spanisch abgeschlossen sind oder kurz vor der Vollendung stehen. Die altgriechischen Übersetzungen, die den Zeitraum vom 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. bis zum 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr. umfassen, bieten neue Einsichten in Bezug auf die frühe jüdische Deutung der Bibel. Dennoch bleiben entscheidende Probleme der "Septuaginta-Hermeneutik" ungelöst; vor allem die Frage, wie man die Interpretationselemente eines übersetzten Textes identifiziert, bleibt offen. Indem J. Ross Wagner wichtige Arbeiten sowohl der Übersetzungswissenschaft als auch der Literaturtheorie heranzieht, entwickelt er einen Interpretationsansatz, der die intensive Untersuchung des Übersetzungsprozesses mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die rhetorische Form des übersetzten Textes verbindet. In this text-critical, literary, and theological investigation of Paul's interpretation of Isaiah in Romans, it is argued that Paul's citations and allusions evince sustained and careful attention to significant portions of Isaiah, in concert with other scriptural voices. Through a radical rereading of Isaiah, Paul appropriates these prophetic oracles as prefigurations of his own mission to Gentiles while simultaneously appealing to Isaiah as a witness to God's continuing fidelity to Israel.The book examines each of Paul's citations and allusions to Isaiah, situating them both within the milieu of early Jewish interpretive practices and within the context of Paul's unfolding argument in Romans.
