Jack Davis – författare

Jack Davis and Wallace Wood's crazed cartooning in Mad changed the art form, and comedy itself, forever. But their gonzo parody work in Mad's sister satire title, Panic, published at the same time, is less well-known. To invert that injustice, this volume of The Fantagraphics EC Artists' Library presents all their zany, pun-packed Panic lampoonery, especially their pomposity-puncturing movie parodies, including Davis's 'My Gun Is the Jury!' 'Come Back, Little Street Car!', 'A Star Is Corn' and Wood's 'African Scream!', 'Gone With The Widow,' and '20,000 Leaks Under The Sea.' These visual volleys are verbalized by Al Feldstein (editor of Panic, later editor of Mad) and Jack Mendelsohn (prolific cartoonist and writer whose non-comics credits include TV's Laugh-In and The Beatles' Yellow Submarine). But the laughs don't languish. Also included is the never-before-reprinted 'V-Vampires,' a riotous romp written by the legendary Harvey Kurtzman and drawn by Wood that vanished after its initial appearance more than 70 years ago!

In 1952, the first MAD comic was created as a way for the writer/editor/artist Harvey Kurtzman to do something quick and easy in between his elaborately researched war comics for EC. Against all odds, sales success soon turned it into his main job and inspired him to expand from goofy parodies of other comics into even zanier satires that revealed to the kids of America how hypocritical the adults, and entire structure of society and capitalism around them, truly were. The core artists - Will Elder, Wallace Wood, Jack Davis and at first John Severin - all found themselves inspired by the opportunity to turn from horror or adventure comics to humour, turning out some of the best work of their comics careers - and going on to mainstream success from their name recognition MAD gave them. By 1955, Kurtzman was ready to move on to grown-up magazine publishing - but seized an opportunity to convert MAD into a magazine first. With the same stable of artists, and a few new contributors from TV (Ernie Kovacs, Roger Price), radio (Stan Freberg) and newspapers, he converted the colour comic to a black-and-white magazine that aimed its satire at kids and adults alike - and went on to even greater success. Kurtzman himself, and most of his artists, moved on after five issues. Those five issues, alongside the initial 23 comics, are given their first complete reprint here. A final volume adds two legacy issues containing Kurtzman's final completed work, plus a fold-out gallery of alternate reprint covers over the decades, a trove of archival material and comprehensively illustrated text detailing MAD's development, impact and sustained influence. A plexi-windowed slipcase shows Alfred E. Neuman, the future of MAD, looking inside the box at its history. These are the issues that shaped the sensibilities of just about all American humour for decades to come - finally available in one place for the first time.

Here, for the first time, in a deluxe two-volume collection, is the best compilation of the covers from EC Comics. From the company's earliest days of its earnest Picture Stories titles to its kiddie, Western, and romance titles of the 1940s, through the heyday of such titles as Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Weird Science, Shock SuspenStories, Crime SuspenStories, Two-Fisted Tales, and Piracy, through its 'New Direction' and 'Picto-Fiction' period with titles such as Aces High, Extra, Impact, Terror Illustrated, and Confessions Illustrated - they're all here! These covers were drawn by the greatest array of artistic talent ever assembled at one comic book company (excepting Fantagraphics, of course). Their names are legend - Craig, Crandall, Davis, Evans, Feldstein, Frazetta, Ingels, Kamen, Krigstein, Kurtzman, Orlando, Severin, Torres, Williamson, and Wood. And most of these covers are coloured by the equally legendary Marie Severin. Each of the hundreds of full-colour covers is lovingly scanned from pristine original comics and presented in a lush, oversize format to show off with spectacular precision every meticulous line, brushstroke, and nuance of chromatographic splendour. But it doesn't end there. This unique collection also showcases alternate covers, original artwork, paperback covers - even unpublished, 'what if' covers by EC 'grand old man' Angelo Torres that have never seen print before. The Crypt of Covers: The Complete EC Covers Compendium takes you on a curated tour of the history of EC Comics through its cover art from start to finish, guided by EC expert Grant Geissman. Each cover in this stunning collection is worthy of gallery or museum display.

In keeping with my longstanding interest in the surgical corrrection of external ear deformities, I have followed Jack Davis'' contributions to this challenging type of reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery since I read his first article in 1951. As a longtime good friend of Jack in our roles as editors of the journal, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and as past presidents of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), I have kept up to-date in reading his numerous accomplishments in external ear surgery for these past 46 years. The reader might find it reassuring to learn that in this period of 4t decades, Jack Davis has contributed to our specialty 42 separate articles, lec tures, discussions, chapters, and other items describing external ear surgery. In 1978 in our journal, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, he presented an excellent re view article on "History of the Aesthetic Surgery of the Ear," which was co authored with the assistance of Horacio H. Hernandez. This same subject was also presented in 1985 in a chapter in an ISAPS book devoted to the ''The Creation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery." Even more importantly, and historically, Davis gave us his opus magnum publication in 1987, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Otoplasty, which covered almost every conceivable aspect of these types of surgery in its 581 pages.
