The study of the Books of Chronicles has focused in the past mainly on its literary relationship to Historical Books such as Samuel and Kings. Less attention was payed to its possible relationships to the priestly literature. Against this backdrop, this volume aims to examine the literary and socio-historical relationship between the Books of Chronicles and the priestly literature (in the Pentateuch and in Ezekiel). Since Chronicles and Pentateuch (and also Ezekiel) studies have been regarded as separate fields of study, we invited experts from both fields in order to open a space for fruitful discussions with each other. The contributions deal with connections and interactions between specific texts, ideas, and socio-historical contexts of the literary works, as well as with broad observations of the relationship between them.

This volume addresses the critical question of how biblical authors engaged with and responded to the political realities and ideologies of their time. Featuring essays by leading scholars in biblical studies and ancient Near Eastern literature, it focuses on themes of power and governance in the Hebrew Bible. The contributors employ a variety of perspectives and methodologies, including detailed postcolonial approaches and specific Korean contexts, to explore how these authors constructed alternative identities amidst changing imperial powers and states. The volume also examines the contemporary relevance and implications of these biblical texts for postcolonial contexts and struggles in Korea. Jaeyoung Jeon beurteilt neuere Modelle zur Entstehung des Pentateuchs, indem er die Erzählungen über Moses Berufung (Ex 3-4) und den Auszug aus Ägypten (Ex 5-13) redaktionskritisch analysiert. Dabei arbeitet er heraus, dass Ex 3-4 durch verschiedene deuteronomistische Kompositions- und Redaktionsstufen entstanden ist, die durch nach-priesterliche Ergänzungen erweitert wurden. Die vergleichende Analyse lässt darauf schließen, dass die deuteronomistischen Bearbeitungen P vorausgingen und dass die P-Berufungserzählung (Ex 6) von der nicht-P-Erzählung (Ex 3-4) abhängig ist. Jeon zeigt außerdem, dass, obwohl sich einige Erzählfäden aus Ex 3-4 auch durch die Auszugserzählung (Ex 5-13) ziehen, die gegenwärtige Form der letzteren eine post-deuteronomistische, aber vor-priesterliche Komposition ist, die auf einer älteren Proto-Exoduserzählung basiert. Daraus schließt er, dass der Pentateuch oder Hexateuch offensichtlich das Ergebnis eines weitaus komplexeren Entstehungsprozesses ist, als die gegenwärtigen Modelle annehmen.
