In the belief that power is something that is negotiated by participants in the instructional process and with the goal of understanding how communication and power interact, this book looks at power and instruction in many different ways. Drawing from the lessons of the social sciences generally, it examines research that has been conducted by instructional communication specialists, looks at newer approaches to power, presents a status report on what is now known, and points to the divergent directions that offer opportunities for future scholarship.

This new edition represents a summation of the extensive work that has been done on communication apprehension, shyness, reticence, and so forth. It is an invaluable introduction to the area for the novice and a 'must have' reference book for serious scholars. Practitioners will find it useful for its detailed coverage of intervention tactics and their relative effectiveness. Those interested in understanding why they are fearful in communication situations will find the book's explanations to be of considerable use. All in all, the book is a wonderful resource for anyone with an interest in phenomena that interfere with communication activities.

Over a decade ago, Beatty and McCroskey developed a paradigm for the scientific study of communication that attributed individual differences in communication to individual differences in underlying neurobiological systems. They called this perspective the communibiological paradigm. In addition to proposing a paradigm supported by a rather specific set of assumptions, Beatty and McCroskey sought to provide a platform for the study of the biological influences on a wide range of communication processes regardless of paradigmatic orientation. This edited volume advances that goal. In-depth discussions of theoretical perspectives in addition to communibiology such as evolutionary psychology, cognitive neuroscience and the biosocial approach and methods of biologically based inquiry - including MRI techniques, EEG analysis, and the measurement of heart rate and hormonal response - are contained in the included chapters. Furthermore, the reader will find coverage of ongoing research programs in interpersonal and mass communication contexts.
