Drawing on hitherto unpublished sources James Casey explores two major themes in Spanish historiography - the consequences of the expulsion of the Moriscos (heavily concentrated in Valencia in the early seventeenth century), and the way in which the Habsburg Monarchy kept or lost control over its peripheral provinces. The study ranges widely over questions of population (including a pioneering attempt for early modern Spain at family reconstitution), landholding and agriculture, exploring the links between depopulation and economic decline - twin phenomena which characterized the peninsula in the age of Spain's decline. Dr Casey has drawn on a variety of previously neglected sources - parish registers, tithe records, cadastral surveys - in order to quantify these developments as far as possible. The result is a reassessment of the chronology and extent of economic recession in one of Spain's most fertile provinces, and a revision of some ideas about the importance of the expulsion of the Moriscos.

The History of the Family concerns the changing interactions between family and social, political and religious structures over the last thousand years of European history. The family is usually described in terms of patterns of kinship, inheritance, and relations between sexes and generations. The author examines the contemporary use of these terms and their evolution from nineteenth-century anthropology and social thought. He then considers how these concepts apply to and reveal the nature of European and other societies.

These are the stories of mysteries, willful deception and conspiracies. Flight 19 the loss of Five US Navy TBM Avengers and one PBM Mariner in the Bermuda triangle. Six airplanes and their crews lost without any trace. To this day, nothing has ever been recovered that can positively be identified as coming from any of the aircraft. Theories abound in a story where there is no physical evidence. This essay simply looks at the facts as they were presented to the Naval accident board in 1945 and attempts to make sense of them. In 1947 something unusual happened near the Air Force Base at Roswell, New Mexico. The base was the home of the 509th Composite Group, the elite group of B-29's that was formed specifically to drop atomic bombs. The 509th was the only group in the world at that time that was capable of employing nuclear weapons. An object was found that many people believed was the wreckage of an extraterrestrial craft. The Base Commander authorized a statement to the local news media to that effect. The next day the Commander travels to higher headquarters to show the find to his superiors. The press is told that the crash debris was just a weather balloon which the Commander apparently was too stupid to recognize as such. Forty years later, the Air Force admits that the story was a lie and they had indeed covered up the actual events. Their explanation is even more ludicrous than the original story. This story presents the facts and the cover-up and attempts to explain them. John F Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was brutally murdered on live TV in front of the entire country. Nearly a year later the Warren Commission offered it's explanation of the event. Their report was so poorly done and so obviously biased, that it simply fostered more questions and conspiracy theories. When did the trial of Lee Harvey Oswald take place? Where was the cross-examination of witnesses? The Dallas Police Force solves the crime of the century within hours only to have the suspect murdered right under their watchful eyes in their own Police Station. Were they the greatest law enforcement unit in the country or the most inept? What about Jack Ruby, the murderer's, murderer? He had clear and obvious connections to organized crime yet the Warren Commission was unable or unwilling to find them. Finally, more than fifty years after the fact, this story presents a plausible explanation of what happened. It's the story that no one wanted to hear in 1963.

As the story approaches the present it becomes a personal account of enlisting in the US Air Force and eventually becoming a fighter pilot. In an experimental style, James Casey presents us with a series of essays on major military events followed by his personal accounts as a new pilot in the Air Force. Casey uses this unique lens to view American history.

This special issue of ZAMP is published to honor Paul M. Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan­ ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi''s 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse­ quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

Indeed, in the more advanced parts of abstract algebra and mathematical logic, one can pro­ ceed only in this manner. In other parts of mathematics, especially in Euclidean geometry, calculus, differential equations, and surface ge­ ometry, intimate connections exist between the mathematical ideas and physical things. In such cases, a deeper (and sometimes quicker) under­ standing can be gained by taking advantage of these connections. I am not, of course, suggesting that one should appeal to physical intuition whenever one gets stuck in a mathematical proof: in proofs, there is no substitute for rigor. Rather, the connections with physical reality should be made either to motivate mathematical assumptions, or to introduce questions out of which theorems arise, or to illustrate the results of an analysis. Such interconnections are especially important in the teaching of mathematics to science and engineering students. But, mathematics students too have much to gain by familiarizing themselves with the interconnections between ideas and real things. The present book explores the geometry of curves and surfaces in a physical way.

This work is a collection of papers on the mechanics of fluids and solids, written by leading researchers. The book encompasses theoretical, experimental and numerical work on a variety of topics, including nonlinear elasticity, plasticity, dynamics, water waves and turbulence. The collection is published in celebration of Professor Paul M. Naghdi's contributions to the field of mechanics. It is intended to be of interest to graduate students and researchers in all branches of continuum mechanics.
