Early Modern Spain: A social History explores the solidarities which held the Spanish nation together at this time of conflict and change. The book studies the pattern of fellowship and patronage at the local level which contributed to the notable absence of popular revolts characteristic of other European countries at this time. It also analyses the Counter-Reformation, which transformed religious attitudes, and which had a huge impact on family life, social control and popular culture.Focusing on the main themes of the development of capitalism, the growth of the state and religious upheaval, this comprehensive social history sheds light on changes throughout Europe in the critical early modern period.

The Kingdom of Valencia in the Seventeenth Century

Drawing on hitherto unpublished sources James Casey explores two major themes in Spanish historiography - the consequences of the expulsion of the Moriscos (heavily concentrated in Valencia in the early seventeenth century), and the way in which the Habsburg Monarchy kept or lost control over its peripheral provinces. The study ranges widely over questions of population (including a pioneering attempt for early modern Spain at family reconstitution), landholding and agriculture, exploring the links between depopulation and economic decline - twin phenomena which characterized the peninsula in the age of Spain's decline. Dr Casey has drawn on a variety of previously neglected sources - parish registers, tithe records, cadastral surveys - in order to quantify these developments as far as possible. The result is a reassessment of the chronology and extent of economic recession in one of Spain's most fertile provinces, and a revision of some ideas about the importance of the expulsion of the Moriscos.
Family and Community in Early Modern Spain
The Citizens of Granada, 1570-1739

James Casey offers an innovative study of prestige, power and the role of the family in a Mediterranean city during the early modern period. He focuses on the structure and values of the ruling class of Granada, where a new elite consolidated its authority. The study suggests that their power was linked to the pursuit of honour, which demanded participation in the politics of the commonwealth and depended greatly on the network of personal relations which they were able to build with kinsmen, clients and patrons. It explores the way in which this system contributed to the relative tranquillity of the community during a turbulent time of religious and political change, that of the rise of absolutism and of the Counter Reformation. The book sheds fresh light on the nature of the early modern family and will be essential reading for historians of early modern Spain and Europe.

The History of the Family concerns the changing interactions between family and social, political and religious structures over the last thousand years of European history. The family is usually described in terms of patterns of kinship, inheritance, and relations between sexes and generations. The author examines the contemporary use of these terms and their evolution from nineteenth-century anthropology and social thought. He then considers how these concepts apply to and reveal the nature of European and other societies.

These are the stories of mysteries, willful deception and conspiracies. Flight 19 the loss of Five US Navy TBM Avengers and one PBM Mariner in the Bermuda triangle. Six airplanes and their crews lost without any trace. To this day, nothing has ever been recovered that can positively be identified as coming from any of the aircraft. Theories abound in a story where there is no physical evidence. This essay simply looks at the facts as they were presented to the Naval accident board in 1945 and attempts to make sense of them. In 1947 something unusual happened near the Air Force Base at Roswell, New Mexico. The base was the home of the 509th Composite Group, the elite group of B-29's that was formed specifically to drop atomic bombs. The 509th was the only group in the world at that time that was capable of employing nuclear weapons. An object was found that many people believed was the wreckage of an extraterrestrial craft. The Base Commander authorized a statement to the local news media to that effect. The next day the Commander travels to higher headquarters to show the find to his superiors. The press is told that the crash debris was just a weather balloon which the Commander apparently was too stupid to recognize as such. Forty years later, the Air Force admits that the story was a lie and they had indeed covered up the actual events. Their explanation is even more ludicrous than the original story. This story presents the facts and the cover-up and attempts to explain them. John F Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was brutally murdered on live TV in front of the entire country. Nearly a year later the Warren Commission offered it's explanation of the event. Their report was so poorly done and so obviously biased, that it simply fostered more questions and conspiracy theories. When did the trial of Lee Harvey Oswald take place? Where was the cross-examination of witnesses? The Dallas Police Force solves the crime of the century within hours only to have the suspect murdered right under their watchful eyes in their own Police Station. Were they the greatest law enforcement unit in the country or the most inept? What about Jack Ruby, the murderer's, murderer? He had clear and obvious connections to organized crime yet the Warren Commission was unable or unwilling to find them. Finally, more than fifty years after the fact, this story presents a plausible explanation of what happened. It's the story that no one wanted to hear in 1963.

25 episodes from the long-running BBC comedy series starring the legendary Les DawsonFor over a decade between 1974 and 1985, lugubrious funnyman Les Dawson had radio audiences in stitches with his hit comedy show Listen to Les.Included in this collection are 25 vintage episodes, showcasing the gravel-voiced master of mirth at his very best. All your favourite characters are here, including gossip-loving housewives Cissie and Ada; chat show host Cosmo Smallpiece; the elegant Sophisticates and the hilariously dismal Desponds - as well as Wotan, Man of Steel; the debut appearance of comic discovery Justin Jest; and a rare interview with boxer Sugar Albert Ackroyd. You''ll hear tales of 1920s gangsters, Britain''s first space hero, and Leonard Shufflebottom: a man so thin, he was once used as a dipstick. Les also pays tribute to a feisty barber and a sheep-headed publican, presents his very own versions of Dallas and Columbo, reflects on the British sense of humour - and reveals how the mother-in-law joke was invented...Packed with deadpan one-liners, melancholic monologues, side-splitting sketches and unforgettable piano sing-alongs, these classic shows are sure to have your tear ducts prickling with laughter.NB: Some of the humour on this recording reflects the era in which it was first broadcastProduction creditsPerformed by Les DawsonWith Roy Barraclough, Colin Edwynn, Daphne Oxenford and Eli WoodsWritten and produced by James CaseyMusic by Brian FitzgeraldFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 2, 11 August 1974-17 March 1985© 2023 BBC Studios Distribution Ltd. This special issue of ZAMP is published to honor Paul M. Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi''s 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

. . . one should not be too ready to erect a wall of separation between nature and the human mind. d''Alembert [Dugas (1955)] It is possible to present mathematics in a purely fonnal way, that is to say, without any reference to the physical world. Indeed, in the more advanced parts of abstract algebra and mathematical logic, one can pro ceed only in this manner. In other parts of mathematics, especially in Euclidean geometry, calculus, differential equations, and surface ge ometry, intimate connections exist between the mathematical ideas and physical things. In such cases, a deeper (and sometimes quicker) under standing can be gained by taking advantage of these connections. I am not, of course, suggesting that one should appeal to physical intuition whenever one gets stuck in a mathematical proof: in proofs, there is no substitute for rigor. Rather, the connections with physical reality should be made either to motivate mathematical assumptions, or to introduce questions out of which theorems arise, or to illustrate the results of an analysis. Such interconnections are especially important in the teaching of mathematics to science and engineering students. But, mathematics students too have much to gain by familiarizing themselves with the interconnections between ideas and real things. The present book explores the geometry of curves and surfaces in a physical way.
