James D. Kirylo gives a personal and reflective account of what it means to be a Catholic teacher, drawing on the rich history of the Church and its inclusive nature through ecumenical, interfaith, and interreligious dialogue, along with the Church’s social teachings and its link to liberation theology and a critical pedagogy in the light of faith. Recognizing teaching as a sacred vocation, Kirylo covers how faith should inform the practical matters of teaching and how these intersect with broader debates outside the classroom, including the COVID-19 pandemic, gun control, the sanctity of life, and climate change. The Catholic Teacher: Teaching for Social Justice with Faith, Hope, and Love is a book that underscores the dialectical interweaving of faith and action in the effort to foster a more just, loving, and right world.

This revised and updated second edition of Paulo Freire: The Man from Recife recounts the life, thought, and experiences of a remarkable man who has left an indelible mark on the social sciences, education, and theology. As one who was born in the northeastern part of Brazil in a city called Recife, Freire experienced the sting of poverty and the pangs hunger within an unjust social and economic system, yet he emerged as a courageous, prophetic voice of conscience. With a new Foreword, Preface, and Afterword, notable stylistic changes in chapter structures, and updated chapters relevant to these contemporary times, this new revised, updated edition continues to bring attention to a man whose thought continues to influence around the globe. This latest edition of Paulo Freire: The Man from Recife is a captivating and refreshing take on Paulo Freire's timeless principles…Kirylo skillfully incorporates issues like neoliberalism, destructive tribalism, and religious sectarian nationalism in dialogue with Freire's transformative ideas, underscoring the continued relevance of Freire’s thought in addressing today's challenges. This book is much more than a simple compendium of historical and bibliographical information; it is a call to action, an inspiration for change, and a testament to the power of critical and transformative education.—DÉBORA B. AGRA JUNKER, PhD, Associate Professor of Critical Pedagogies, Founder and Director of Cátedra Paulo Freire, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary James D. Kirylo has brilliantly revised his foundational text on Paulo Freire's life and work. This new edition is panoramic and marvelously readable, expanding our knowledge of the contexts from which Freire emerged to become a leading advocate for social justice in education and society.—IRA SHOR, Co-author with Paulo Freire, A Pedagogy for Liberation Reading Paulo Freire: The Man from Recife deeply fascinated me. Each chapter on relevant passages from Paulo Freire's life and his intellectual and educational work expresses a profound connection between Kirylo and the Brazilian thinker, leading us to a clear understanding of the reasons that has made Freire a reference of universal and timeless repercussion. I am impressed by the admiration, affection and seriousness that Kirylo shows in the characterization of Paulo Freire’s land, his country and hometown. The book's structure, with short chapters and fluid language, makes it a pleasant and captivating journey, which increases our appetite for tasting each page.—LUCIMARA CRISTINA DE PAULA, State University of Ponta Grossa, Parana, Brazil James D. Kirylo’s Paulo Freire: The Man From Recife provides a unique portrait of one of the most influential educationists of the 20th century. This second edition – with its thoughtful revisions to the style, substance, and structure of the text – makes what was already a key work in Freirean scholarship even more accessible and engaging. Kirylo shows, with great insight and clarity, how Freire’s ideas emerged from his personal, pedagogical, and political experiences. I recommend this book very highly for anyone seeking to gain a better understanding of Paulo Freire – the intellectual, the teacher, and the man.—PETER ROBERTS, University of Canterbury, New Zealand

For five days a week for approximately nine months out of the year totaling countless hours, teachers work with other people’s most treasured gifts—their children. That the teacher is the most important element in fostering an energetic, engaging, and inspiring classroom environment where authentic learning can unfold cannot be overstated. Indeed, it is the teacher who understands self or does not; it is the teacher who is prepared or is not; it is the teacher who has command of subject matter or does not; it is the teacher who inculcates in an appropriate way or does not; and, it is the teacher who is patient, understanding, empathetic, and enthusiastic or is not. To that end, Teaching With Purpose underscores what it means to be an insightful teacher, foundationally emphasizing that the central aspect toward richly transforming education is through the professionalization of what it means to be a teacher. Written in accessible language, and attentive to connecting theory to practice, the benefits and features of this book are mindful of a diverse readership.

Since teacher education looked to become a formal field of study in the 1800s, it has historically contended with competing forces in the effort to solidify its professional identity. Currently, that contention is juxtaposed with those external forces that look to promote fast-track teacher training, with its ultimate goal to dismantle traditional teacher education programs, and those internal forces, whereby teacher education within itself continues to struggle with its own identity, power, and influence. To that end, this book, A Turning Point in Teacher Education: A Time for Resistance, Reflection, and Change, suggests we have reached a climax point, a turning point in teacher education, meaning we must work to resist and denounce those external forces that are laboring to undermine the professionalization of what it means to be a teacher. Simultaneously, we must also deeply reflect and be clear about those internal forces at work when it comes to solidifying the place, power, and necessity of traditional teacher education programs, ultimately announcing the furthering of what should be.

A thoughtful teacher is one who works to foster an inspiring classroom environment where students fall in love with learning. Indeed, it is incumbent on the teacher to understand self, to be prepared, to possess command of subject matter, to teach in a developmentally appropriate manner, to mindfully incorporate culturally relevant practices, and to illuminate a sense of connection with a diverse student population. In that light, The Thoughtful Teacher: Making Connections with a Diverse Student Population highlights the critical importance of what it means to thoughtfully teach, emphasizing that a central aspect toward transformation in education is through the dedicated efforts of thoughtful teachers. Written in accessible language and making clear the important connection between theory and practice, this book is an informative text for teachers, teacher educators, school administrators, and those who have an interest in education.
