1 This year marks the l0 h anniversary of the IFIP International Workshop on Protocols for High-Speed Networks (PfHSN). It began in May 1989, on a hillside overlooking Lake Zurich in Switzerland, and arrives now in Salem Massachusetts 6,000 kilometers away and 10 years later, in its sixth incarnation, but still with a waterfront view (the Atlantic Ocean). In between, it has visited some picturesque views of other lakes and bays of the world: Palo Alto (1990 - San Francisco Bay), Stockholm (1993 - Baltic Sea), Vancouver (1994- the Strait of Georgia and the Pacific Ocean), and Sophia­ Antipolis I Nice (1996- the Mediterranean Sea). PfHSN is a workshop providing an international forum for the exchange of information on high-speed networks. It is a relatively small workshop, limited to 80 participants or less, to encourage lively discussion and the active participation of all attendees. A significant component of the workshop is interactive in nature, with a long history of significant time reserved for discussions. This was enhanced in 1996 by Christophe Diot and W allid Dabbous with the institution of Working Sessions chaired by an "animator," who is a distinguished researcher focusing on topical issues of the day. These sessions are an audience participation event, and are one of the things that makes PfHSN a true "working conference.

The first book to focus on the communications and networking aspects of UAVs, this unique resource provides the fundamental knowledge needed to pursue research in the field. The team of authors covers the foundational concepts of the topic, as well as offering a detailed insight into the state of the art in UAVs and UAV networks, discussing the regulations, policies, and procedures for deployment (including analysis of risks and rewards), along with demonstrations, test-beds, and practical real-world applications in areas such as wildlife detection and emergency communications. This is essential reading for graduate students, researchers, and professionals in communications and networking.

This year marks the fourth year of the International Working Conference on Active Networks; this volume contains the papers accepted for full presentation at the conference. These proceedings are proof that Active Networks is a vibrant ?eldwithtrulyinternationalparticipation,withresearchdonenotonlyinthe contextofformalprograms(suchasFAINandDARPAActiveNets),butalso in a number of independent research programs. We received signi?cantly more submissions than could possibly be accom- datedduringthetwodaysofsessions,andcombinedwiththedesireforhigh standards this has resulted in a very selective program. The distinguished p- gramcommitteedidanoutstandingjobofreviewingthepapers,withdetailed commentsandsuggestionstotheauthors,eachpaperreceivingfrom4to6 reviews.Ofthe53paperssubmitted,9wereacceptedunconditionally.Anad- tionalsetofpaperswereconditionallyaccepted,withprogramcommitteem- bers working with the authors to insure that review concerns were addressed, while shepherding towards ?nal publication; 11 of these papers are included in the proceedings.An additional set of poster presentations were given for worthy submissionsthatcouldnotbeaccommodatedwithintheselimitations,aswell as position papers and work in progress. ThebestpaperawardwenttoNadiaShalaby,YitzchakGottlieb,andMike Wawrzoniak for "Snow on Silk: A NodeOS in the Linux Kernel," which begins these proceedings and the papers in the node operating systems session. These proceedingsalsocontainactivenetworkingpaperson:servicedeployment,d- covery,andcomposition;monitoringandmanagement;mobilewireless;system architecture; and peer-to-peer and group communication. In keeping with the "working"natureoftheconference,signi?canttimewasreservedfordiscussion, andpanelsonactivemobilenetworking,peer-to-peer,andthefutureprospects for active network research and deployment. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems, IWSOS 2008, held in Vienna, Austria, December 10-12, 2008. The 20 revised full papers and 13 revised short papers presented were carefully selected from the 70 full and 24 short paper submissions from authors from 33 different countries. The papers are organized in topical sections on peer-to-peer systems, overlay networks as well as resource and service management.
