Der Pikaroroman geht nach kurzer Konstitutionsphase rasch in anderen Erzähltraditionen auf. Dessen ungeachtet hat die Forschung pikareske Motive bis in die Moderne hinein weiterverfolgt. Dieser Band bezieht erstmals systematisch die darin angezeigte nachhaltige Persistenz auf die kurze Geschichte der Pikareske als Gattung, indem er die produktive Verarbeitung einzelner konstitutiver Elemente ihres diskursiv-strukturellen Profils in unterschiedlichen generischen und diskursiven Kontexten des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts analysiert. Die Beiträge befragen solche Kontexte jeweils auf die Valenz pikarischer Erzählmuster, wobei das Interesse an spezifisch narrativen Formen von Wissen einen gemeinsamen Fluchtpunkt bildet. Im Fokus stehen neben Grimmelshausen und den frühen deutschsprachigen Adaptationen nicht nur bislang wenig beachtete simplicianische Texte, sondern auch Romane Beers, Weises und Ettners. Studien zu spanischen Texten und deren Bearbeitung im âge classique erweitern das Untersuchungsfeld komparatistisch. Der Band bietet damit neue Forschungsperspektiven nicht nur zum deutschen und europäischen Schelmenroman, sondern auch zur historischen Narratologie, zu Problemen der Gattungstheorie und zur Kulturgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit.
