This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Informatics in Schools: Situation, Evolution, and Perspectives, ISSEP 2015, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in September/October 2015. The 14 full papers presented together with 3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 36 submissions. The focus of the conference was on following topics: sustainable education in informatics for pupils of all ages; connecting informatics lessons to the students’ everyday lives; teacher education in informatics; and research on informatics in schools (empirical/qualitative/quantitative/theory building/research methods/comparative studies/transferability of methods and results from other disciplines).

This volume contains the papers presented at the 8th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2009).The symposium was held at the Te- nische Universit. at Dortmund, Germany, during June 4-6, 2009. The main theme of the SEA series is the role of experimentation and of algorithm engineering techniques in the design and evaluation of algorithms and data structures. Contributions are supported by experimental evaluation, methodological issues in the design and interpretation of experiments, the use of (meta-)heuristics, or application-driven case studies that deepen the und- standing of a problem's complexity. For each symposium, papers are solicited from all areas of algorithmic engineering research. Previous meetings, under the name of "Workshop on Experimental Al- rithms" (WEA), were held in Riga (Latvia, 2001), Ascona (Switzerland, 2003), Angra dos Reis (Brazil, 2004), Santorini (Greece, 2005), Menorca Island (Spain, 2006), Rome (Italy, 2007), and Provincetown (USA, 2008). The ProgramCommittee ofSEA 2009received64 submissions.Eachsubm- sion was reviewed by at least three ProgramCommittee members and evaluated on its quality,originality,and relevance to the symposium.Overall,the Program Committee wrote249 reviews with the help of almost 100 trusted external ref- ees. The Committee selected 23 papers, leading to an acceptance rate of 35.9%. The decision process was made electronically using the EasyChair conference management system. In additionto the accepted contributions,this volumealso containsabstracts ofthe invitedtalks givenby Heinz Bast(Intel), MichaelA. Bender (Stony Brook University and Tokutek, Inc.), and Marc Schoenauer (INRIA Saclay - Ile-de- France).

The International Conference on Informatics in Secondary Schools: Evolution and Perspective (ISSEP) is an emerging forum for researchers and practitioners in the area of computer science education with a focus on secondary schools. The ISSEP series started in 2005 in Klagenfurt, and continued in 2006 in Vilnius, and in 2008 in Torun. ´ The 4th ISSEP took part in Zurich. This volume presents 4 of the 5 invited talks and 14 regular contributions chosen from 32 submissions to ISSEP 2010. The ISSEP conference series is devoted to all aspects of computer science teaching. In the preface of the proceedings of ISSEP 2006, Roland Mittermeir wrote: “ISSEP aims at educating ‘informatics proper’ by showing the beauty of the discipline, hoping to create interest in a later professional career in c- puting, and it will give answers di?erent from the opinion of those who used to familiarize pupils with the basics of ICT in order to achieve computer lit- acy for the young generation. ” This is an important message at this time, when several countries have reduced teaching informatics to educating about current softwarepackagesthatchangefromyeartoyear. ThegoalofISSEPistosupport teaching of the basic concepts and methods of informatics, thereby making it a subject in secondary schools that is comparable in depth and requirements with mathematics or natural sciences.
