So aber hatte er bei seinem Eintreffen nur noch bedauernd Lady Moiras Tod feststellen können. Lord Wismore war seither wie von Sinnen vor Schmerz und vor Trauer. Es schien, als hätte ihn der tragische Schicksalsschlag zu einem gebrochenen Mann werden lassen. Und auch jetzt, da er am offenen Grabe der geliebten Toten stand und den zu Herzen gehenden Worten des Geistlichen lauschte, machte er den Eindruck, trotz seiner Jugend alle Lebenslust verloren zu haben. Und niemand, der diese bewegenden Worte voll tiefster Trauer und Verzweiflung las, konnte an dem großen Schmerz des Witwers zweifeln. Abgesehen davon war die märchenhafte Hochzeit des verliebten, glückstrahlenden jungen Paares allen Freunden und Bekannten, aber auch ungezählten Zaungästen noch in zu guter Erinnerung, als daß man angesichts dieser Tragik nicht zutiefst hätte berührt sein müssen. Damals war man sich einig gewesen: Lord und Lady Wismore hatten ein traumhaftes Liebesglück gefunden, und dieses Glück hatte ihnen aus den Augen geleuchtet, als sie sich vor dem Altar die Hände reichten und der Geistliche den Segen sprach. Doch selbst die, die damals weder geladen gewesen waren, noch als Zaungäste der Hochzeit hatten beiwohnen können, hatten durch die überschwenglichen Berichte in Presse und Fernsehen von der Krönung dieser großen Liebe erfahren und bewegt Anteil genommen an dem außergewöhnlichen Glück des Paares.
