This volume provides readings from the works of eighteen Latin American thinkers of the nineteenth century who were engaged in articulating and examining the problems that Spanish and Portuguese America faced in the one hundred years after securing independence. The selections represent all major regions of Latin America. Although these regions differ significantly with regard to indigenous background, geography, climate, and available resources, their people confronted the common problems that surround the intractable challenges of statecraft and nation building: issues of race, international relations, economics, education, and self-understanding.Burke and Humphrey provide fresh, accessible translations of key works, a majority of which appear for the first time in English; a General Introduction that sets the works in historical and intellectual context; detailed headnotes for each selection; a Guide to Themes; and bibliographic references.

Janet was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, to a spiritualist couple in the late 1940s. She became an orphan during the Georgia Tann investigation. She was rescued by a CIA agent at Union Train Station in Chicago, Illinois. The agent managed to have her adopted by his sister Margaret and her husband. It was the best he could do for her. Because of her paternal parents, she was born a divine spiritualist. With her special circumstances, she had to raise herself because no one understood her. When she was a young lady of eighteen, help arrived. A spiritualist from New Jersey was there to tutor her for four years. Another spiritualist from California showed up in 1977 to help her pave her way through life. Her most difficult task was raising her daughter Jennifer with the same gift as her.

This extraordinary true story is about an ordinary man who defied death through unshakeable faith, the power of prayer, and first-class medical care. Bill is a retiree who survives a major heart attack just a few months after his retirement. After twelve days in the hospital, four stents, and several serious complications, he is released and, for six years, works hard to regain most of his former heart function. However, after a long bout with the RSV virus, he begins to suffer congestive heart failure. He then has another near heart attack, requiring three more stents, and now has major damage to both sides of his heart, as well as three different heart arrhythmias. After several more months of various medications and medical devices, his heart function continues to decline, and he now has stage 4 congestive heart failure. After the results of an ECG show further decline, he is told to go to the emergency room immediately. The EMT's manage to stabilize him, but he has thirty-five pounds of fluid in his body that they struggle to remove, and his kidneys are failing. After a CRT implant to help resynchronize his heart rhythms fails to do much good, he is transferred to the Corewell (Meijer) Heart Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They install two tiny pumps in his heart ventricles to keep him alive and begin discussing the only two options left: a mechanical heart (LVAD) or a heart transplant. He and his wife decide on the heart transplant, but time is running out. Not only does he need to qualify for the transplant list, but he then has to wait for a donor heart to become available.Through a harrowing series of events and miraculous answers to prayer, he receives a donor heart with only hours to live. His remarkable recovery and return to a normal life shows God's power to heal and his faithfulness in answering our prayers. This is a story that you won't soon forget.
