Ohne die verschiedenen Künste wäre die Etablierung der Sexualpathologie als neue Wissenschaftsdisziplin undenkbar gewesen. In Ermangelung aussagekräftigen empirischen und statistischen Materials nutzen die frühen Sexologen um 1900 die unterschiedlichsten kulturellen Erzeugnisse - inklusive deren Produzenten - als Laboratorium für ihre Forschungen. Dieses enge Bündnis von Wissenschaft und Kunst auf der einen Seite, das breite gesellschaftliche Interesse an den neuen Erkenntnissen zur menschlichen Sexualität - insbesondere dann, wenn sie sich auf „deviante“ oder gar „kriminelle“ Spielarten beziehen - auf der anderen Seiten, perpetuieren den sexualpathologischen Diskurs, dessen textuelle Repräsentationen im kulturellen Archiv überdeutlich seine Spuren hinterlässt und seine kulturwissenschaftliche Erforschung geradezu heraufbeschwört. Der interdisziplinäre Sammelband Crimes of Passion untersucht ausgehend von solchen Repräsentationen die Interferenzen zwischen Sexualpathologie, Kunst, Rechtsprechung, Gesellschaft, Medizin und Psychologie und legt dabei einen besonderen Schwerpunkt auf literarische Texte und Verfahren.Der Band präsentiert somit nicht nur die aktuelle kulturwissenschaftlich interessierte Forschung zur Sexualpathologie in ihrer Vielfalt und Komplexität, sondern zeichnet mit Beiträgen aus Literaturwissenschaft, Geschichtswissenschaft, Soziologie, Kunstgeschichte, Psychologie, Architektur und Philosophie auch ein differenziertes Bild dieses dichten diskursiven Beziehungsgeflechts.
