The subject of competition between religion and television has, if only indirectly, received considerable attention, particularly from religionists disturbed by the threat posed by television programming to traditional religious beliefs, values, and attitudes. This detailed study considers the competing cultural forces of television and religion from a wider and more theoretical perspective. Newman examines the major forms of competition and the various motives and strategies of the people and groups involved. His philosophical approach allows us to see that the most important aspect of competition between television and religion is their rivalry as cultural forces. In this broad philosophical examination of the relationship between religion and the family, Jay Newman delves into issues concerning Biblical religion, culture, sociology, and family values. He maintains that recent media debates about the Bible and family values have obscured the complex relationship between the family and religion.Focusing on how the family values that the Biblical literature imparts might be relevant--or irrelevant--to family problems and other cultural problems in a modern Western democracy, this study contributes to the understanding of basic cultural relations between religion and the family. This textbook has its origins in a course that I began developing at Union College in the mid-1980s to teach physics to life science students in a way that would int- est them and show the connections of fundamental physics to modern biology and medicine. From my own research experiences and interests in biophysics, I know that almost all areas of modern life sciences integrally involve physics in both experimental techniques and in basic understanding of process or function. However, I and many colleagues with whom I have spoken have been unhappy over the years with published attempts to direct a textbook to this audience. Most such texts are watered down engineering physics books with occasional added sections on related biology topics that are easy to skip over or assign students to read on their own. As I set out to write this textbook, I had certain definite goals in mind. I wanted to write a book that was truly directed at life science students, one that integrated modern biology, biophysics, and medical techniques into the presentation of the ma- rial. Believing in the less is more credo, I chose to omit certain standard topics that are usually included in texts for this audience, while expanding on topics that have more relevance to the life and biomedical sciences.

Jay Newman first puts the contemporary problem of inauthentic culture into philosophical and historical context. He then goes on to show how traditional philosophical criticism of inauthentic culture can help us understand many disturbing aspects of such contemporary cultural phenomena as television and public relations, as well as contemporary forms of craftsmanship, democracy, and the academy. Religious intolerance is very old and widespread – a phenomenon of a highly distinctive nature which defies reduction to a simpler kind of vice.
