But Mami Wata is a Vodou goddess, the Mother of Waters. The Europeans on the island know nothing of her, and the slaves who worship and fear her, won't talk. The pirate captain is forced to look for the goddess's priest ... but can he trust him?

Redbeard the privateer is given a mission by the governor of Saint-Domingue: to investigate mysterious attacks on French plantations. This time, however, he'll have to set sail without his old companion Baba who, sickened by the cruelty of colonial authority towards black people, leaves the crew to assist escaped slaves instead. Not long after, a slave hunter offers a partnership to Redbeard, in order to find Baba and his new friends - and kidnaps the captain's granddaughter to force his hand!

Having rescued his daughter, who'd been kidnapped to blackmail his father Redbeard, Eric joins him on the island where the 'maroons', runaway slaves, have sought refuge. Their plan is still to find Baba, who left the crew to assist the maroons, but in no time they find themselves caught in the locals' infighting. When an external threat comes to compound the internal struggles, what will be left of everyone's dreams of freedom - and what path will Redbeard and Baba choose?
