In 1699, Louis XIV of France sent an embassy to the most mysterious of oriental sovereigns, the Negus, or King, of Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia).

Jean-Baptiste Poncet is practicing medicine in the court of the Shah, in Isfahan, Persia. To rescue an old friend, Juremi, imprisoned in the Urals, Poncet travels to Russia where he engages in a duel of wits with Peter the Great. On their journey back the friends are captured and sold as slaves.

Also, many consider the experience as a spiritual adventure, with a view to removing themselves from the bustle of modern life. Jean-Christophe Rufin followed this "Northern Way" to Santiago de Compostela by foot, on over eight hundred kilometers.
