Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyse and explain them comprehensively.

This book provides a general introduction to the topic of turbulent flows. Apart from classical topics in turbulence, attention is also paid to modern topics. After studying this work, the reader will have the basic knowledge to follow current topics on turbulence in scientific literature. The theory is illustrated with a number of examples of applications, such as closure models, numerical simulations and turbulent diffusion, and experimental findings. The work also contains a number of illustrative exercisesReview from the Textbook & Academic Authors Association that awarded the book with the 2017 Most Promising New Textbook Award:“Compared to other books in this subject, we find this one to be very up-to-date and effective at explaining this complicated subject. We certainly would highly recommend it as a text for students and practicing professionals who wish to expand their understanding of modern fluid mechanics.”

The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurement technique has undergone a strong development in the last 10 years. This book presents the proceedings of an international workshop held in Zaragoza, Spain, on March 31st and April 1st, 2003, containing contributions from worldwide leading teams in the development of the PIV method. Most of these papers have been funded by the EC via the European EUROPIV 2 consortium to improve the performances of this measurement technique toward applications in the European Aeronautical industry, including results which are of strong interest for the worldwide community in Fluid Dynamics.
