The proceedings contain papers accepted for the 17th ISPE International Conference on Concurrent Engineering, which was held in Cracow, Poland, September 6-10, 2010. Concurrent Engineering (CE) has a history of over twenty years. At first, primary focus was on bringing downstream information as much upstream as possible, by introducing parallel processing of processes, in order to prevent errors at the later stage which would sometimes cause irrevocable damage and to reduce time to market. During the period of more than twenty years, numerous new concepts, methodologies and tools have been developed. During this period the background for engineering/manufacturing has changed extensively. Now, industry has to work with global markets. The globalization brought forth a new network of experts and companies across many different domains and fields in distributed environments. These collaborations integrated with very high level of profesionalism and specialisation, provided the basis for innovations in design and manufacturing and succeeded in creating new products on a global market.

This book presents the results of extensive research in computer-supported decision processes in engineering,carried out over many years by the author and his coll- orators. The author has cooperated with designers in Poland and in Germany. Very often there was university–industry cooperation for the building of speci?c so- ware for certain engineering tasks. The majority of the concepts,for example “the designer’s personal assistant”and the decomposition and coordination of multicriteria decision problems, evolved through cooperation with designers in this ?eld. The author,while working together with them,understood that this group of people is characterised by a strong in- vidualism and that the range of applied approaches and methods is wide. The most signi?cant in?uences on the author’s opinions through contact with the designers were the lectures he delivered for more than 12 years for post-graduate studies on computer-aided design in machinery. The lectures included seminars which required the creation of concepts for an individual computer support system for decision processes,generally well known to the designers who participated in the lectures. In the theoretical part the characteristics of the actual computer-aided design and engineering (CAD and CAE) tools were depicted,whereas in the practical part the students created concepts of computer environments for the realisation of design projects in their own professional work. The task was con?ned to the expr- sion of the design process.

Transdisciplinary engineering transcends other inter- and multi-disciplinary ways of working, such as Concurrent Engineering (CE). In particular, transdisciplinary processes are aimed at solving complex, ill-defined problems, or problems for which the solution is not immediately obvious. No one discipline or single person can provide sufficient knowledge to solve such problems, so collaboration is essential. This book presents the proceedings of the 27th ISTE International Conference on Transdisciplinary Engineering, organized by Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, from 1-10 July 2020. ISTE2020 was the first of this conference series to be held virtually, due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Entitled Transdisciplinary Engineering for Complex Socio-technical Systems - Real-life Applications, the book includes 71 peer-reviewed papers presented at the conference by authors from 17 countries. Global Perspective for Competitive Enterprise, Economy and Ecology addresses the general theme of the Concurrent Engineering (CE) 2009 Conference – the need for global advancements in the areas of competitive enterprise, economy and ecology.The proceedings contain 84 papers, which vary from the theoretical and conceptual to the practical and industrial. The content of this volume reflects the genuine variety of issues related to current CE methods and phenomena.
