This work focuses on the structural and functional description of the microtubule proteins. The objective of the authors is to establish a relationship between the structure of microtubule proteins and the functions in which these polymers are involved. This book covers topics which have been treated only in a preliminary manner in previous works, such as microtubule dynamics and microtubule poisons. Microtubules display a variety of cellular roles and are vital for the separation and correct distribution of chromosomes during cell division. They also play an important role in morphogenesis, intracellular transport, secretion, and motility. Microtubule Proteins is a concise, easy-to-read text which is particularly of interest to cell biologists, chemists, neurochemists, and graduate students interested in cell biology.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in older adults, and although significant efforts have been made to find the mechanisms and biomarkers which would enable early detection and treatment, the disease remains a major scientific and clinical challenge. A number of therapeutic interventions have been developed to target the pathology believed to play a role in the course of the disease, with varying success, and this book, Therapeutic Trials in Alzheimer’s Disease: Where Are We Now?, explores past and present clinical trials in AD based on pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. The book is divided into 6 parts. Part 1 focuses on pharmacological strategies aimed at the two proteins associated with AD, amyloid-β and tau; Part 2 discusses a broad range of therapeutic strategies, including metal-targeting agents and antioxidants. Part 3 deals with repurposed drugs, particularly antidiabetics and lipid-lowering therapies, and in Part 4, the challenges, advances, and therapeutic effects of stem cell and gene therapies for AD are detailed and discussed. Part 5 debates the therapeutic effects of non-pharmacological approaches, particularly ketogenic diets and supplements, as well as the benefits of physical exercise, yoga, and acupuncture. Finally, part 6 discusses the benefits of brain stimulation, and the usefulness of imaging techniques, and their ability to assess responses to treatment. Providing an overview of efforts to date in the attempt to address AD, the book will be of interest to all those involved in the research and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

In recent years, medical developments have resulted in an increase in human life expectancy. Some developed countries now have a larger population of individuals aged over 64 than those under 14. One consequence of the ageing population is a higher incidence of certain neurodegenerative disorders. In order to prevent these, we need to learn more about them. This book provides up-to-date information on the use of transgenic mouse models in the study of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease. By reproducing some of the pathological aspects of the diseases, these studies could reveal the mechanism for their onset or development. Some of the transgenic mice can also be used as targets for testing new compounds with the potential to prevent or combat these disorders. The editors have extensive knowledge and experience in this field and the book is aimed at undergraduates, postgraduates and academics. The chapters cover disorders including: Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's and other CAG diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), recessive ataxias, disease caused by prions, and ischemia.
