The 9th International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Appli- tions (DASFAA 2004) was held during March 17-19, 2004 on the beautiful Jeju island of Korea. The DASFAA conference provides an international forum for technical discussions among researchers, developers, and users of database - stems from academia, business, and industry. The main focus of DASFAA is on research in database theory, development of advanced DBMS technologies, and their advanced applications. A premier database conference in the Asia/Paci?c region, DASFAA has been held every two years, and in many countries in the - gion. To promote the area further and to answer the needs of many participants, the steering committee decided to hold the conference annually. DASFAA 2004 was the ?rst such annual conference. The conference was organized by the Special Interest Group on Databases (SIGDB) of the Korea Information Science Society and the Advanced Infor- tion Technology Research Center (AITrc) at KAIST - an engineering research center of excellence (ERC) supported by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF).We had a number of sponsors who made generous cont- butionstomaketheconferencesuccessful. The Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD) is a leading international conference in the area of data mining and knowledge discovery. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the successful annual series of PAKDD conferences held in the Asia Pacific region. It was with pleasure that we hosted PAKDD 2006 in Singapore again, since the inaugural PAKDD conference was held in Singapore in 1997. PAKDD 2006 continues its tradition of providing an international forum for researchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from all aspects of KDD data mining, including data cleaning, data warehousing, data mining techniques, knowledge visualization, and data mining applications. This year, we received 501 paper submissions from 38 countries and regions in Asia, Australasia, North America and Europe, of which we accepted 67 (13.4%) papers as regular papers and 33 (6.6%) papers as short papers. The distribution of the accepted papers was as follows: USA (17%), China (16%), Taiwan (10%), Australia (10%), Japan (7%), Korea (7%), Germany (6%), Canada (5%), Hong Kong (3%), Singapore (3%), New Zealand (3%), France (3%), UK (2%), and the rest from various countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The Third International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications (ADMA) organized in Harbin, China continued the tradition already established by the first two ADMA conferences in Wuhan in 2005 and Xi’an in 2006. One major goal of ADMA is to create a respectable identity in the data mining research com- nity. This feat has been partially achieved in a very short time despite the young age of the conference, thanks to the rigorous review process insisted upon, the outstanding list of internationally renowned keynote speakers and the excellent program each year. The impact of a conference is measured by the citations the conference papers receive. Some have used this measure to rank conferences. For example, the independent source cs-conference-ranking.org ranks ADMA (0.65) higher than PAKDD (0.64) and PKDD (0.62) as of June 2007, which are well established conferences in data mining. While the ranking itself is questionable because the exact procedure is not disclosed, it is nevertheless an encouraging indicator of recognition for a very young conference such as ADMA.
