Navigating and resolving issues in intercultural communication is an integral part of the interpreter’s role on a daily basis. This book is an essential guide to the interpersonal dimensions of intercultural communication in a variety of key interpreting contexts: business, education, law, and healthcare.

Drawing on the unique perspectives of professional interpreters, Cho focuses on two key questions that remain underexamined in the field of intercultural communication: why does intercultural communication often break down, and how do individuals manage intercultural communication issues? Each chapter deals with issues pertinent to small cultural aspects of intercultural communication, including gender, ethnic migrant communities, educational cultures among migrants of Asian backgrounds, and monolingualism/monoculturalism in courtroom and refugee interview contexts. Spanning diverse geographical domains, the book highlights the impact of macro power on interpreting as well as the significance of individual agency and micro power, which can rebalance the given communicative context.

Offering a comprehensive, up-to-date, innovative, and critical perspective on intercultural communication in interpreting, this is key reading for student and professional interpreters and those on courses in language and intercultural communication.

Focusing on health care interpreting in Australia, this book examines the under-recognition of interpreting from a critical sociolinguistic perspective encompassing language, race and class.

Interpreters play an important role in promoting diversity and inclusion but why is interpreting not properly recognised? Cho grapples with this question by focusing readers’ attention to developments in interpreting following increased migration in an English-monolingual Australia, a context in which other languages and speakers have been historically under-valued. Through compelling analysis and the voices of health care interpreters in Australia, this groundbreaking book explores how issues with interpreting are fundamentally issues of justice that affect minority languages and their speakers. Covering diverse professional and social spaces of interpreting, the book discovers linguistic, racial and class hierarchies embedded in English monolingualism and their impact on multilingual practices and populations. From both historical and contemporary perspectives, the book critically investigates monolingual practices from the past and tensions between enduring monolingual ideologies and multilingual realities, suggesting specific ways to overcome monolingual mindsets to make societies more inclusive.

This volume will be of interest to students and scholars in interpreting studies, health communication, intercultural communication and sociolinguistics.

This volume critically examines the phenomenon of “English fever” in South Korea from both micro- and macro-perspectives. Drawing on original research and rich illustrative examples, the book investigates two key questions: why is English so popular in Korea, and why is there such a gap between the ‘dreams’ and ‘realities’ associated with English in Korea? These questions are explored through the eyes of English-Korean translators and interpreters, who represent the professional group most intensely engaged in the zeal for English language mastery. Macro-perspectives focus on historical factors leading to the rise of English, with English-Korean translation and interpreting as a key theme. Micro-perspectives explore the dreams that individuals attach to English and the ways in which they imagine it can transform their lives, and contrast these dreams with the stark realities felt on the ground. The gaps between these dreams and realities are explored from various angles, which include commodification, gender and neoliberalism. The book thus offers fresh insights on how the phenomenon of “English fever” has been created, reproduced, and sustained from both historical and contemporary viewpoints.

From the reviews:

This is an important study of how English is experienced in one country, Korea. A very insightful analysis of the interlocking of historical factors influencing the status of English, and the interlocking significance of class, gender, aesthetics, myth-making, and the role of the media and competitive commodification. The study is based on competent use of relevant theoretical approaches, solid fieldwork, and a personal capacity to draw complex threads together. It demonstrates how language policy can be analysed in a stimulating way that has major importance beyond the borders of Korea. Language ideologies are brought to life effectively. Robert Phillipson, Emeritus Professor, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark
