Es gibt viele Gründe, die Bibel nicht zu lesen. Wer erwartet, dass ihn ein freundlicher Erzähler am Anfang an die Hand nimmt, auf geradem Wege durch den Text begleitet und am Ende unbeschadet wieder entlässt, wird garantiert enttäuscht werden. Denen, die es gerne leicht haben, ist deshalb vom Bibellesen abzuraten; doch auch all jenen, die z.B. vor den frauenfeindlichen, gewalttätigen und intoleranten Seiten der Bibel lieber die Augen verschließen. Bibellesen - so könnte man zusammenfassen - ist nicht ungefährlich für den Glauben. Indem der Bibelwissenschaftler solcherart mit einer gehörigen Portion (Selbst-)Ironie vom Bibellesen abrät, weist er auf tatsächlich vorhandene Probleme hin. Zugleich gibt er Hinweise darauf, wie und warum man diese eigenartige, faszinierende Schrift lesen sollte.

Das Mahlsakrament ist ernsthaft in Gefahr. Den einen ist es egal, weil sie am Sonntag lieber ausschlafen wollen, andere ziehen showartige Heilungsgottesdienste vor und wieder andere missbrauchen das Herrenmahl als Mittel zur Selbstabgrenzung oder zum geistlichen Narzismus. Ist Christsein ohne Abendmahl möglich oder gehört es zu seinem Wesen? Wie müsste man heute Eucharistie feiern, wenn man es im Sinne Jesu tun will? Der Neutestamentler versucht eine Antwort aus der Perspektive Jesu, für den das Mahl mit den Sündern das prophetische Zeichen der Gegenwart Gottes und seiner grenzüberschreitenden Liebe war. Dabei wird deutlich, wie gerade die ältesten biblischen Traditionen die christliche Mahlfeier zukunftsfähig machen können: als ein Sakrament der letztlich universalen Integration, ein Fest der Liebe und der Versöhnung, des Ausgleichs zwischen Arm und Reich, Alten und Jungen, Männern und Frauen.

Aus den tiefen Brunnen der Vergangenheit schöpfen, um die Gegenwart zu verstehen und in gottgefälliger Menschenfreundlichkeit mitzugestalten - um diese Konzeption einer kontextuellen Bibelwissenschaft geht es hier. Religionsgeschichtliche Fragen werden integriert, um das Fremde, Störende und Horizonteröffnende neutestamentlicher Literatur herauszuarbeiten, und Religionsgeschichte, Exegese und Pastoral zu drei-einigen Aspekten einer neuen Bibelwissenschaft zu machen.
