Embark upon a journey through Norfolk’s eventful history, from the earliest times to the present day. From the discovery of fossil footprints dating back nearly one million years, to Boudica’s revolt, the Roman occupation, the creation of the Norfolk Broads during the Middles Ages and the growth of the textile industry and agricultural advances, this county has always been at the forefront of innovation and the development of our nation. Mustard manufacturing, Viking farmers, friendly invasions and digging up ancient mammoths – we do things differently here in Norfolk.

Compiled by two highly respected authors and museum curators, this richly illustrated book features 100 objects – ranging from a Viking Thor’s Hammer and Lord Nelson’s funeral drape, to the whistle used during the Christmas truce of 1914. Norfolk has evidence of a substantially longer human past than any other part of Britain. The discovery of the beautiful Happisburgh handaxe, described inside, led to a find of further flint tools twice as old as anything found elsewhere in the country. Each object tells a fascinating story in its own right, adding depth and colour to the chapters of Norfolk’s history. The result is an illuminating visual record, demonstrating the central role objects have in understanding our past and revealing the often crucial role Norfolk has played in the development of our national story.

This book examines the portrayal of Israel as a royal-priestly nation within Exodus and against the background of biblical and ancient Near Eastern thought. Central to the work is a literary study of Exodus 19:4-6 and a demonstration of the pivotal role these verses and their main image have within Exodus. This elective and honorific designation of Yahweh's cherished people has a particular focus on the privilege of access to him in his heavenly temple. The paradigm of the royal grant of privileged status has profound implications for our understanding of the Sinai covenant.

This book is a study of God’s mercy, together with related themes such as grace, steadfast love, patience, and forgiveness, throughout the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible.Beginning with God’s self-declaration of his merciful character in Exodus 34:6-7, the book leads readers through the various iterations of this “Compassion Creed” throughout the Old Testament, exploring the several terms describing God’s character as well as descriptions of nonverbal indications of mercy, which to date have received little attention. God’s mercy is shown to be a more central and pervasive theme than has sometimes been acknowledged and (while not exclusively) can profitably serve as a focal point for a comprehensive Old Testament theology. The Mercy of God in the Old Testament is suitable for students and scholars of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, particularly those working on Exodus and the nature and characterisation of God in the Bible. New Testament scholars should also find here a rich resource for exploration of the background to such themes as mercy and grace in the New Testament.

We are increasingly conscious of the significance of our body language in our everyday interactions. The writers of the Bible were also aware of the role this nonverbal form of communication played and have recorded aspects of this in their narratives, or used idioms based on such gestures as head or hand movements, eye contact, and modes of dress. As with spoken or written language, postures and gestures need to be interpreted against a cultural background. This book provides a comprehensive overview of this rich world of nonverbal communication in the Old and New Testaments for the general reader and scholar alike.

This book issues a provocative challenge to the notion, prevalent in Christian circles, that people (or their "e;souls"e;) go to heaven when they die. Though deeply entrenched in Christian and Western culture, there is little or no biblical warrant for such a belief. John Davies presents a biblical theology of heaven, informed by mainstream biblical scholarship, and in the process sweeps away popular misconceptions. Be prepared to have your understanding of such cherished passages as John 14:2 ("e;In my Father's house . . ."e;) challenged. But as well, this book seeks to show the more glorious dimensions of the Christian hope, our renewal as whole persons in the context of a cosmic restoration, the outcome of the victory of Jesus. Though much of the language of the Bible regarding our eternal destiny is in the form of imagery, we should continue to use such imagery, understanding it against its cultural background, rather than construct our own more impoverished mythology based more on dubious logic and sentiment.

Castles and the Anglo-Norman World is a major new synthesis drawing together a series of 20 papers by 26 French and English specialists in the field of Anglo-Norman studies. It includes summaries of current knowledge and new research into important Norman castles in England and Normandy, drawing on information from recent excavations. Sections consider the evolution of Anglo-Norman castles, the architecture and archaeology of Norman monuments, Romanesque architecture and artifacts, the Bayeux Tapestry and the presentation of historic sites to the public. These studies are presented together with a consideration of the 12th century cross-Channel Norman Empire, which provides a broader context. This work is the result of a conference held at Norwich Castle in 2012, which was part of a collaboration between professionals in the fields of archaeology, architecture, museums and heritage, under the banner of the Norman Connections Project.EPUB3: Reflowable
