In the decades since the Vietnam War, veteran memoirs have influenced Americans' understanding of the conflict. Yet few historians or literary scholars have scrutinized how the genre has shaped the nation's collective memory of the war and its aftermath. Instead, veterans' accounts are mined for colorful quotes and then dropped from public discourse; are accepted as factual sources with little attention to how memory, no matter how authentic, can diverge from events; or are not contextualized in terms of the race, gender, or class of the narrators.Veteran Narratives and the Collective Memory of the Vietnam War is a landmark study of the cultural heritage of the war in Vietnam as presented through the experience of its American participants. Crossing disciplinary borders in ways rarely attempted by historians, John A. Wood unearths truths embedded in the memoirists' treatments of combat, the Vietnamese people, race relations in the United States military, male-female relationships in the war zone, and veterans' postwar troubles. He also examines the publishing industry's influence on collective memory, discussing, for example, the tendency of publishers and reviewers to privilege memoirs critical of the war. Veteran Narratives is a significant and original addition to the literature on Vietnam veterans and the conflict as a whole.

Most baseball fans know of the amazing accomplishments Hall of Fame members achieved on the field, from Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hit streak to Cy Young’s 511 career wins. But few are as familiar with the ballplayers’ lives away from the diamond—especially those icons who played before the Internet and 24/7 media coverage. Beyond their baseball statistics, what kind of individuals were they? How did they conduct themselves out of the spotlight? What made them tick? In Beyond the Ballpark: The Honorable, Immoral, and Eccentric Lives of Baseball Legends, John A. Woodlooks at the personal lives of fifty members of the Hall of Fame, examining their childhoods, families, influences, life-changing events, defining moments, and more. The players range from the really good guys to bizarre characters and even the downright immoral. The author considers how tragedies may have impacted players, such as the shooting of Ty Cobb’s beloved father by his own mother, and seeks to explain the dispositions of others, such as why the great Rogers Hornsby couldn’t seem to get along with anybody. By taking a closer look at who the players were as men, Beyond the Ballpark captures the essence of these fifty Hall of Famers. Including such names as Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth, this book is for all fans who are interested in more than just a ballplayer’s statistics.

The Business of Possibility reveals the potential we hold to create a paradigm shift in organisations. It gets to the heart of the matter in what makes any organisation – for profit or not for profit – rise above the many. It may be the first truly ground-breaking work since the book by Peters and Waterman - In Search of Excellence - almost 40 years ago. This is a guide. It points to and explains the shift organisational leaders - and the influential - must make to create thriving and thus sustainable organisations. That is, if they want to both survive and thrive in this new world, we have created. It demands that you take your own journey of deepening or re-discovering your innate transformative state – your unique state of Possibility. Seeing Possibility is the superhighway we travel along when seeing and manifesting any transformative idea. It leads to a transformed life and relationships – this critical ingredient is exposed in transforming your life and relationships – the pathway to transform organisations. In this guide, John recounts instances from his life of seeing Possibility, the impact these instances had on his business, as well as on the lives of many of his colleagues and clients. He explains how you too can see Possibility; what it might and might not be; the benefit of letting go of thinking you know ‘the truth’ of anything; the freedom that seeing Possibility can give you; and how, when seen, it can re-cast how you see life, and re-shape your communications, relationships, business, family and vocational life for your own benefit and for the benefit of the common good. In seeing Possibility, you – like John – can see a world in which we are kind and understanding towards one another, where a sense of fairness and decency govern all our decisions at work and at play. A world in which wisdom and common sense prevail as reality - not simply in the realm of a wistful ideas. The business of possibility guides you on a journey that will benefit all of us.

Following up on Professor Wood's 2016 Beyond the Ballpark: The Honorable, Immoral, and Eccentric Lives of Baseball Legends, which was listed in Sport's Collector Digest's top forty baseball books of 2016, he examines twenty-five additional legends. Included are such notables as the lovable Yogi Berra, Stan Musial, and Gil Hodges, the feisty Billy Martin, the complex Ted Williams, the tragic Shoeless Joe Jackson, the delightful Pepper Martin, and the crook Hal Chase. Wood tracks down how these players acted away from the ballpark, and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The author also includes his pictures of all the gravesites, except for two who were not interred. There is much funny and sad stuff here.
