The Fine Chemicals industry is concerned with the manufacture of relatively small volume products by multistage manufacturing processes. Pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, colouring materials and biocidal compounds are typical examples. Understanding the fundamental science behind these chemical processes is of great benefit in the development of efficient, high-yielding and environmentally friendly processes. However, there are no other texts which specifically address this topic by covering the physiochemical principles underpinning the subject. This primer outlines the strategy for obtaining the requisite data, and then goes on to outline the chemical and chemical engineering concepts involved in process development. These include a description of pre-reaction equilibria in single and two-phase systems, factors influencing selectivity in competing reactions, mixing effects in single and two-phase reactions, the science behind workup processes, and a discussion of the principles behind scale-up.

Addressing the academic market, working in the area of social ethics, this publication addresses key problems in contemporary life, and raises important questions about our growing awareness of the limits of contemporary ways of living with modern economies and modern religion. The author explores possible alternatives to such capitalism and religion and develops a compelling argument for the development of a transcendence of capitalism, what the author terms "hopeful progression through and beyond the limits of modernity". In developing this argument the author also injects each chapter with both local (British) and global case studies to illustrate practical problems alongside the theoretical discussion. In addition, whilst focusing on Christianity as an entry point to the various arguments, the author also works in conversation with New Religious Movements and other Faiths including Islam, Hindi and Judaism.

Can the urban church survive in Britain and Western Europe? The increasing irrelevance of churches and Christianity to people and public life drives this enquiry to look for answers by examining marginalization processes focused on divisions within and between nations, peoples and environment. John Atherton draws particularly on British, American and European political philosophy, economics, feminist ethics and theology to reconnect Christianity to people and public life. He also examines contemporary inter-faith issues and suggests a new Christian political economy engaging mainstream economics and interfaith economics.

Challenging Religious Studies represents a breakthrough in our understanding and development of the practices, ethics and theories of religious studies through engagement with the world of daily life and its breath-taking transformation since 1800, as revealed particularly in living standards, life expectancy and subjective wellbeing. Together with the equally disturbing growth of inequalities between and within nations, this constitutes the profound paradox of development. What is of particular interest is the book’s rigorous treatment of the question why religion is better at delivering greater subjective wellbeing and how it does so. To build such arguments always involves engaging with key related disciplines, experiences and practices, including economics, psychology, sociology and economic history. But it will also increasingly offer religion the opportunity to participate in such developments but always and increasingly through collaboration with other such disciplines and experiences, and always with the objective of furthering the greater wellbeing of all people in and through their environments.
