This SpringerBrief equips readers to develop defensible fire safety designs for a range of concrete structures. It identifies current gaps in the research and provides a more complete understanding of the structural and thermal response of contemporary Post-tensioned (PT) concrete structures to fire. The brief includes chapters on contemporary construction using PT concrete, previous structural fire test research programs, recent research programs, real fire case studies, and current research needs. It explores the progression of PT concrete structures, looking at the sustainability and aesthetic benefits, the ongoing development of stronger concretes, and best practice guidance for improving safety in the event of fire.Designed for practitioners and researchers in fire engineering, this brief is a valuable tool for those studying the impact of fire on concrete, fire safety designs, and building safety optimization. Advanced-level students in civil engineering will also find the content useful.

The percentage of women applying for engineering licensure remains well below the percentage of women enrolling in engineering undergraduate programs--an issue of retention that continues throughout women engineers' career trajectories. Although there have been many efforts on the recruitment side to attract people of varying genders to study engineering and join the profession, such efforts are ineffective if this diverse population is not retained in engineering. This book identifies the factors affecting the recruitment of women into, and the retention of women in the engineering profession. The authors examine the experience of male and female students at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels to better understand women's experiences at each stage in their careers through to becoming industry members or academics. Issues such as intimidation and discouragement at the undergraduate level, disproportionate funding and support at a graduate student level, and the correlation between retention and opportunities for collaboration at an industry/academic level are discussed. The book concludes by highlighting the key findings affecting the retention of women in engineering and offers potential solutions. The findings covered in this book may be used by engineering postsecondary institutions and workplaces to create a more diverse and inclusive environment. This book is also useful to researchers, scholars, students, and academics interested in the retention of women in STEM industries.

This book highlights human behaviour and architectural considerations for prescriptive code requirements for emergency exits in heritage cultural centers. Closed circuit television camera (CCTV) footage from a Canadian heritage cultural centre was analyzed from three separate unannounced evacuations, where recommendations based on the first two evacuations were implemented for the third. This study aims to (1) develop a baseline for the behaviour and actions of people during the pre-movement and movement stages of emergency egress and evacuation situations and (2) collect behavioural and movement data to aid the fire safety community with the decision process for egress and evacuation strategies and (3) interrogate and highlight architectural barriers in heritage structures with respect to emergency evacuation. The discussion of findings includes occupant behaviour, architectural implications and evacuation modelling and considers the often-conflicting intersection between architectural conservation and fire safety.
