This book was first published in 1975, the bicentenary of Jane Austen's birth. Though she has long been recognized as one of the major English novelists her reputation was established relatively late and has withstood periods of neglect and controversy. The present volume brings together nineteen essays that marked the bicentenary and in doing so reflected the critical attitudes which some of the twentieth century's most influential scholars have entertained towards the novelist. These essays range from nineteenth-century reactions to the novels and to the novelist herself, through twentieth-century criticism of the individual novels, to considerations of the novelist's reputation abroad. This book will be of interest both to scholars and students of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fiction and also to the general reader of Jane Austen's novels.

Inflammation of the brain, usually brought on by a viral infection, encephalitis currently poses a grave threat to patients around the world. With the migration of West Nile virus into North America, there is a greater awareness and corresponding need to understand, diagnose, and manage this illness. In Encephalitis: Diagnosis and Treatment, experts discuss advances in diagnostic tools, as well as therapeutic approaches that allow clinicians to better recognize and treat afflicted patients.Individual chapters address the principal infectious and non-infectious causes of brain inflammation, including paraneoplastic encephalitides—an apparent autoimmune process in patients with malignancies—as well as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a post-infectious disorder. The book addresses etiology, epidemiology, and specific issues in diagnosis, pathology, and treatment, including various laboratory methodologies, pathologic changes seen in the different disorders, and diagnosis and management of the seizures that occur quite frequently in these disorders. With contributions from a group of international experts, the book provides a perspective on this disorder that is both broad and in-depth.

Lyme disease remains a subject of considerable public and clinical interest, and misunderstandings about Lyme borreliosis continue to cause widespread concern about potential long-term disability. Although the infection occurs primarily in highly endemic areas of Europe and North America, these areas are expanding, as global warming leads to a steady expansion of the tick vectors' habitats. In the period since the 2nd edition was published our understanding of the biology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of this infection have continued to evolve. Many of these important advances have been clarified in a new US joint clinical guideline by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, American Academy of Neurology and American College of Rheumatology. The new edition of the book also: · - Updates knowledge of the reservoir hosts, competent vectors and the necessary vector-human interactions required to make infection possible. · - Explains new approaches that improve accurate laboratory diagnosis. · - Elaborates on the clinical manifestations that may or may not be indicative of infection. · - Updates treatment recommendations. · - Considers multiple dimensions of symptoms occurring in patients who have had Lyme disease. This volume is intended for all medical practitioners who will need to consider this infection in the differential diagnosis of the patients they treat. Alongside an overview of the disease and its pathology, focused chapters explain the cutaneous, rheumatologic and neurologic manifestations. The book further emphasizes how to differentiate between neurobehavioral symptoms commonly misattributed to Lyme neuroborreliosis and disorders actually associated with nervous system infection - a differentiation informed by considerable new data in recent years.
