John Lakos – författare

Developing a large-scale software system in C++ requires more than just a sound understanding of the logical design issues covered in most books on C++ programming. To be successful, you will also need a grasp of physical design concepts that, while closely tied to the technical aspects of development, include a dimension with which even expert software developers may have little or no experience. This is the definitive book for all C++ software professionals involved in large development efforts such as databases, operating systems, compilers, and frameworks. It is the first C++ book that actually demonstrates how to design large systems, and one of the few books on object-oriented design specifically geared to practical aspects of the C++ programming language. In this book, Lakos explains the process of decomposing large systems into physical (not inheritance) hierarchies of smaller, more manageable components. Such systems with their acyclic physical dependencies are fundamentally easier and more economical to maintain, test, and reuse than tightly interdependent systems. In addition to explaining the motivation for following good physical as well as logical design practices, Lakos provides you with a catalog of specific techniques designed to eliminate cyclic, compile-time, and link-time (physical) dependencies. He then extends these concepts from large to very large systems. The book concludes with a comprehensive top-down approach to the logical design of individual components. Appendices include a valuable design pattern "Protocol Hierarchy" designed to avoid fat interfaces while minimizing physical dependencies; the details of implementing an ANSI C compatible C++ procedural interface; and a complete specification for a suite of UNIX-like tools to extract and analyze physical dependencies. Practical design rules, guidelines, and principles are also collected in an appendix and indexed for quick reference. 0201633620B04062001

Maximize Reward and Minimize Risk with Modern C++

Embracing Modern C++ Safely shows you how to make effective use of the new and enhanced language features of modern C++ without falling victim to their potential pitfalls.

Based on their years of experience with large, mission-critical projects, four leading C++ authorities divide C++11/14 language features into three categories: Safe, Conditionally Safe, and Unsafe. Safe features offer compelling value, are easy to use productively, and are relatively difficult to misuse. Conditionally safe features offer significant value but come with risks that require significant expertise and familiarity before use. Unsafe features have an especially poor risk/reward ratio, are easy to misuse, and are beneficial in only the most specialized circumstances.

This book distills the C++ community's years of experience applying C++11 and C++14 features and will help you make effective and safe design decisions that reflect real-world, economic engineering tradeoffs in large-scale, diverse software development environments. The authors use examples derived from real code bases to illustrate every finding objectively and to illuminate key issues. Each feature identifies the sound use cases, hidden pitfalls, and shortcomings of that language feature. After reading this book, you will

Understand what each C++11/14 feature does and where it works best Recognize how to work around show-stopping pitfalls and annoying corner cases Know which features demand additional training, experience, and peer review Gain insights for preparing coding standards and style guides that suit your organization's needs Be equipped to introduce modern C++ incrementally and judiciously into established code bases

Seasoned C++ developers, team leads, and technical managers who want to improve productivity, code quality, and maintainability will find the insights in this modular, meticulously organized reference indispensable.

Maximize Performance with C++ Allocators for the Working Programmer

C++ Allocators for the Working Programmer provides a comprehensive guide to mastering memory management in C++ using local allocators. The book covers the C++17 polymorphic memory resources (PMR) and demonstrates how to apply them to improve software performance. It includes practical examples and detailed explanations to help you integrate custom memory allocation strategies into your code.

Designed for both experienced and novice C++ developers, this book offers insights into leveraging allocator-aware types, transforming C++ classes to be allocator-aware, and designing effective local allocators. By understanding these techniques, developers can optimize memory usage and enhance the efficiency of their C++ applications.

The book focuses primarily on using C++17-compliant standard libraries, with some mentions of minor changes available in C++20, and sidebars indicating what is available in Bloomberg's open source offerings.
