It was written in 1915 by Canadian John McCrae, an artillery man, poet, and medical doctor, upon the death of a friend and fellow soldier during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915.This is a faithful reissue of the Canadian first edition of McCrae's writings, originally issued by his friends in 1919 in his honour and memory. It includes the best of his poetry and selections of his letters from the front lines together with a thoughtful essay of appreciation by his friend and fellow medical officer, Sir Andrew Macphail.

"John McCrae, physician, soldier, and poet, died in France a Lieutenant-Colonel with the Canadian forces. The poem which gives this collection of his lovely verse its name has been extensively reprinted, and received with unusual enthusiasm. The volume contains, as well, a striking essay in character by his friend, Sir Andrew Macphail."This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world''s bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

For humans, understanding a natural language sentence or discourse is so effortless that we hardly ever think about it. For machines, however, the task of interpreting natural language, especially grasping meaning beyond the literal content, has proven extremely difficult and requires a large amount of background knowledge. This book focuses on the interpretation of natural language with respect to specific domain knowledge captured in ontologies. The main contribution is an approach that puts ontologies at the center of the interpretation process. This means that ontologies not only provide a formalization of domain knowledge necessary for interpretation but also support and guide the construction of meaning representations. We start with an introduction to ontologies and demonstrate how linguistic information can be attached to them by means of the ontology lexicon model lemon. These lexica then serve as basis for the automatic generation of grammars, which we use to compositionallyconstruct meaning representations that conform with the vocabulary of an underlying ontology. As a result, the level of representational granularity is not driven by language but by the semantic distinctions made in the underlying ontology and thus by distinctions that are relevant in the context of a particular domain. We highlight some of the challenges involved in the construction of ontology-based meaning representations, and show how ontologies can be exploited for ambiguity resolution and the interpretation of temporal expressions. Finally, we present a question answering system that combines all tools and techniques introduced throughout the book in a real-world application, and sketch how the presented approach can scale to larger, multi-domain scenarios in the context of the Semantic Web. Table of Contents: List of Figures / Preface / Acknowledgments / Introduction / Ontologies / Linguistic Formalisms / Ontology Lexica / Grammar Generation / Putting Everything Together / Ontological Reasoning for Ambiguity Resolution / Temporal Interpretation / Ontology-Based Interpretation for Question Answering / Conclusion / Bibliography / Authors' Biographies

This book constitutes the proceedings of the satellite events held at the XXX Semantic Web Conference, ESWC 2025, held in Portoroz, Slovenia, during June 1–2, 2025.The 31 Posters & Demos papers are presented together with 12 PhD Symposium papers and 7 Industry papers in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 43 Posters& Demo papers, 15 PHD Symsposium papers and 14 Industry papers. The theme of  the conference was “Empowering Knowledge through Semantics: From Knowledge Graphs to Neurosemantics”. The satellite events are an important aspect of facilitating the main conference discussion as well as fundamental questions about how we acquire, represent, use, and interact with knowledge and semantics. The satellite events of ESWC 2025 include the poster and demo session, the PhD symposium, the industry track, project networking, and workshops and tutorials.

In Flanders Fields is a war poem in the form of a rondeau, written during the First World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it on May 3, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. According to legend, fellow soldiers retrieved the poem after McCrae, initially dissatisfied with his work, discarded it. "In Flanders Fields" was first published on December 8 of that year in the London-based magazine Punch. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

In flanders fields and other poems is a moving collection that captures the emotional weight of war, sacrifice, and remembrance through vivid, lyrical verse. Written during the height of World War I, the poems express the anguish and resilience of those who served, drawing from the lived experience of a soldier and physician. The collection opens with the iconic poem that gives the book its name, painting a stark image of poppy-covered graves and the lingering presence of the fallen. It calls on the living to honor the dead not just with memory, but with action carrying forward the fight for which lives were lost. Throughout the collection, there is a haunting juxtaposition between the serenity of nature and the chaos of war, with singing birds soaring over fields marked by violence. The emotional undercurrent is one of solemn duty, patriotism, and the painful beauty of sacrifice. Accompanied by an essay offering context on the poet's life and service, the work as a whole forms a powerful meditation on loss, legacy, and the enduring call to remember.
