The U.S. Marines Corps is the greatest fighting force on the planet, but its so much more than that: its a factory for producing first-rate leaders, problem-solvers, and innovators. In 2006, John Warren and John Thompson led Marines into combat in the worlds most dangerous city: Ramadi, Iraq. But when they got home, employers didnt understand what they had to offer. Undeterred, they founded their own specialty mortgage company, growing it from scratch into a national powerhouse over the course of a decade. When the two decorated veterans applied the values and training of the U.S. Marine Corps to build a thriving business, they defied corporate Americas expectations. Thats because they realized that, far from producing mindless drones, the Corps trains its warriors in adaptability, initiative, and courageideal traits for anyone in leadership. In Lead Like a Marine, Warren and Thompson lay out the simple, universal rules that helped them succeed, from valuing grit and potential over pedigree, to condensing large groups into resilient fireteams, to cross-training team members so that anyone can step up to the plate in a crisis. While the corporate world is mired in maintaining the status quo, respecting status, and flattering ego, Warren and Thompson stripped away the fat that prevents organizations from innovating and excelling.Full of smart, actionable advice, gripping combat stories, and entrepreneurial lessons, this book will give you the tools and the training you need to truly lead like a Marine.

Thompson provides a survey of modern thought on the doctrine of the Trinity, which has recently enjoyed a revival of interest. He examines the work of important theologians and their views on the relationship of the trinitarian doctrine to Scripture, the Church, philosophy, politics, and society.

One of the more important developments in the field of theology in the past two decades has been a gradual but genuine revival of interest in the doctrine of the Trinity. This fundamental Christian doctrine had been neglected by theologians, who saw it as isolated from practical Christian faith and life. Recently, however, feminist and liberationist, as well as more traditional Catholic and Protestant theologians, have come to see the Trinity not as an abstract doctrine, but instead as dealing with the living and dynamic being and acts of God, and closely related to Jesus Christ and the resurrection as the mystery of salvation. This insight has in many ways become one of the central themes of contemporary theology. In this study, Irish Presbyterian theologian John Thompson provides a survey of the wide variety of modern thought on this important theme, examining the work of figures like Karl Barth, Karl Rahner, Wolfhart Pannenberg, and Jurgen Moltmann, and their views on such issues as the relationship of the trinitarian doctrine to Scripture, the Church, philosophy, politics, and society.

Digital Signal Processing: Concepts and Applications, second edition covers the basic principles and operation of DSP devices. Its aim is to give the student the essentials of this mathematical subject in a form that can be easily understood and assimilated. The text concentrates on discrete systems, starting from digital filters and discrete Fourier transforms. These are then extended into adaptive filters and spectrum analysers with the minimum of mathematical derivation, concentrating on demonstrating the performance which is achievable from these processors in communications and radar system applications. This new edition has been updated to include learning outcomes and summaries and provide more examples. The text has been completely redesigned and is presented in a clear and easy-to-read style.Key features:- Self assessment questions within the text, with answers provided- Numerous practical worked examples on processor design and performance simulation- MATLAB® code for animated simulations available to students via World Wide Web accessThis textbook is appropriate for undergraduate and MSc courses in signals and systems and signal processing, and for professional engineers who wish to have a simple, easy-to-read reference book on DSP techniques.

The dramatic increases in food prices experienced over the last four years, and their effects of hunger and food insecurity, as well as human-induced climate change and its implications for agriculture, food production and food security, are key topics within the field of agronomy and agricultural research. Contested Agronomy addresses these issues by exploring key developments since the mid-1970s, focusing in particular on the emergence of the neoliberal project and the rise of the participation and environmental agendas, taking into consideration how these have had profound impacts on the practice of agronomic research in the developing world especially over the last four decades. This book explores, through a series of case studies, the basis for a much needed ‘political agronomy’ analysis that highlights the impacts of problem framing and narratives, historical disjunctures, epistemic communities and the increasing pressure to demonstrate ‘success’ on both agricultural research and the farmers, processors and consumers it is meant to serve.Whilst being a fascinating and thought-provoking read for professionals in the Agriculture and Environmental sciences, it will also appeal to students and researchers in agricultural policy, development studies, geography, public administration, rural sociology, and science and technology studies.

In this groundbreaking book Bill Bolton and John Thompson present a completely new take on the conventional domains of entrepreneur, leader and manager. They argue that in today’s turbulent and uncertain world, businesses no longer have the time for a business cycle that begins with an entrepreneur, hands over to a manager and finally brings in a strategic leader when things are flagging. ‘The New Normal’ that now prevails requires that these things run together and calls for a new kind of all-rounder.Bolton and Thompson give us a new word to describe such a person: The ENTIREPRENEURThe entirely competent person, able to discern aright and make things happen.Drawing upon the successful person-centred approach of their books on entrepreneurs they first tell the stories of over 40 entirepreneurs, demonstrating clearly that such people do exist. After discussing the ‘New Normal’ context they present a fascinating analysis that goes below the surface to describe the key Talent, Temperament, Technique and Discernment attributes that explain the entirepreneur. Readers have the opportunity to make a self-evaluation of their own attribute strengths, concluding with a final ‘entirepreneur’ score. This fascinating and insightful look at the entirepreneur is a clear pointer to what will be demanded of those who wish to succeed amid the vicissitudes of the 'New Normal’.

Karl Barth is the foremost theologian of the twentieth century, some would say since Thomas Aquinas. Our understanding of Jesus- our Christology- is crucial to Christian faith. It is the touchstone by which everything else stands or falls, and it is at the centre of the present-day theological debate. In this study, Professor Thompson brings the two together. He seeks to understand Barth on Christ. In his words, 'to let Barth be heard on a central (indeed the central) theme of his theology'. It is the first comprehensive treatment of its kind and one which proves to be very relevant for our discussions about Jesus today.

Substantially revised and updated, this fourth edition of The UK financial system presents a comprehensive explanation of the workings of the institutions and markets which make up the UK financial system, and discusses the issues affecting them. It presents key theoretical developments such as asymmetric information, the efficient markets hypothesis, behavioural economics and the term structure of interest rates, thus providing an analytical framework to aid understanding of the institutional structure.Several case studies are provided throughout the book looking at the failure of various financial firms and the lessons that can be learned from these. Examples include Equitable Life, Barings Bank, the Bank of International Credit and Commerce (BCCI) and Long Term Capital Management.

Throughout the world the nature and regulation of financial systems have changed dramatically following the global financial crisis. This book introduces the necessary theory and a range of relevant statistics to supplement the narrative. Coverage includes a critique of the UK financial institutions and markets, as well as regulation emanating both from within the UK and also from supranational bodies such as the Bank for International Settlements and the European Union. The discussion is based on both the underlying theory as well as the operating practices of the institutions and markets. The book is subdivided into three main sections, each supplemented by a comprehensive glossary: financial institutions; financial markets; and the regulation of banks and other financial institutions. It will be essential reading for undergraduate students enrolled on courses in financial economics and banking.
