Cultural Geography in Practice provides an innovative and accessible approach to the sources, theories and methods of cultural geography. Written by an international team of prominent cultural geographers, all of whom are experienced researchers, this book is a fully illustrated guide to methodological approaches in cultural geography. In order to demonstrate the practice of cultural geography each chapter combines the following features:·Practical instruction in using one of the main methods of cultural geography (e.g. interviewing, interpreting texts and visual images, participatory methods)·An overview of a key area of concern in cultural geography (e.g. the body, national identity, empire, marginality)·A nuts and bolts description of the actual application of the theories and methods within a piece of researchWith the addition of boxed definitions of key concepts and descriptions of research projects by students who devised and undertook them, Cultural Geography in Practice is an essential manual of research practice for both undergraduate and graduate geography students.

Timespace undermines the old certainties of time and space by arguing that these dimensions do not exist singly, but only as a hybrid process term. The issue of space has perhaps been over-emphasised and it is essential that processes of everyday existence, such as globalisation and environmental issues and also notions such as gender, race and ethnicity, are looked at with a balanced time-space analysis. The social and cultural consequences of this move are traced through a series of studies which deploy different perspectives - structural, phenomenological and even Buddhist - in order to make things meet up. The contributors provide an overview of the history of time and introduce the concepts of time and space together, across a range of disciplines. The themes discussed are of importance for cultural geography, sociology, anthropology, cultural and media studies, and psychology.

This book is about the people who always get taken for granted. The people who clean our offices and trains, care for our elders and change the sheets on the bed. Global Cities at Work draws on testimony collected from more than 800 foreign-born workers employed in low-paid jobs in London during the early years of the twenty-first century. This book breaks new ground in linking London's new migrant division of labour to the twin processes of subcontracting and increased international migration that have been central to contemporary processes of globalisation. It also raises the level of debate about migrant labour, encouraging us to look behind the headlines. The authors ask us to take a politically informed view of our urban labour markets and to prioritise the issue of poverty in underemployed communities.

In Cornwall the tradition of storytelling goes back a long way. Years ago “drolling”, telling stories around the fire on the long nights, was a natural part of life there, and to this day out of the way country pubs still hold ‘story telling nights’. This book is a collection of such stories, all but one set in Cornwall. Some of them, of course, involve the sea and all that flows from it. Others have a background in the mining days of two hundred years ago, But Cornwall is far more than its’ history. ‘The Short Order Chef’ is a story about the very modern dilemma of working in a county where most employers shut down for half the year, and one man’s very innovative solution to this situation. ‘The Kronek’ is a story about the conflict between the incomer community and the established locals. ‘Moonlight on the Water’ is a tale of ancient belief meeting modern life, and ‘********************’ is about the miner’s legend about the little people. And of course, there is the tradition of piracy and smuggling. ’Captain Avery’s Emerald’ is a sideways look at time and history that refuses to lie down and die peacefully. All the stories stand alone, and they all have a very dark heart. If you like your stories with a dark twist this one is for you.
