A fascinating look at how Mapplethorpe and Munch, although separated by many years, shared certain affinities in their lives and artworkThis revelatory catalogue delves into the many affinities shared between two widely renowned and discussed artists, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) and Edvard Munch (1863-1944), whose intensely studied work has, until now, never been considered in relation to one another. Mapplethorpe + Munch brings to light how these two monumental figures curiously relate on an existential level, in how they deal with questions concerning sexuality, and in their way of utilizing self-portraiture as a means to explore issues of personal identity.Featuring essays that examine the thematic impulses behind the accompanying exhibition, this publication establishes a previously unexplored association between two equally contentious art figures, while working to impart alternative perspectives and new insight into their respective outputs. Although distinct in their legacies, Mapplethorpe and Munch remain remarkably intertwined.Distributed for MercatorfondsExhibition Schedule:Munch Museum, Oslo(02/06/16–05/29/16)

Georg Baselitz has been exploring, challenging and redefining contemporary art for over six decades, mainly via the medium of paint. A cornerstone of this task has been his complex exchange with historical and contemporary art. Georg Baselitz: Feet First illuminates the German artist’s relationship to the art of Edvard Munch, which he has been in artistic dialogue with since the 1960s.This richly illustrated book includes writings by exhibition curator Jon-Ove Steihaug, Christian Weikop, Sverre Wyller and Baselitz himself, as well as a longer conversation with the artist.

In this book the five prominent contemporary artists Marlene Dumas, Terje Nicolaisen, Nalini Malani, Georg Baselitz and Tracey Emin have each compiled a personal selection of Edvard Munch’s drawings. Munch drew more or less daily throughout his long life and left behind approximately 7700 drawings. Each of the five selections provide a unique glimpse into this abundant material and is presented together with works by the artists, and an interview in which they reflect on Munch’s drawings and their own art.
