Die mittelalterliche Stadtverwaltung war im Wesentlichen eine auf Geschaftsbucher gestutzte Verwaltung. Stadtbucher, d. h. von der stadtischen Verwaltung gefuhrte Geschaftsbucher, sind daher die zentrale Quellengattung der spatmittelalterlichen und fruhneuzeitlichen Stadtgeschichte. In Mitteleuropa sind Stadtbucher in zahlreichen Stadten und in vielfaltigen Formen uberliefert. Das breite Spektrum der erhaltenen Bucher reicht von Rechts- und Statutenbuchern uber den Bereich der freiwilligen Gerichtsbarkeit bis hin zu Rechnungs- oder Steuerbuchern. Die gleichermaen von Historikerinnen und Historikern wie von Archivarinnen und Archivaren stammenden Beitrage des Sammelbandes geben einen spannenden Einblick in die reiche Stadtbuchuberlieferung sowie den erreichten Stand bei der Erforschung und Erschlieung der Bestande in Deutschland, Tschechien, Osterreich, Polen, Ungarn und der Slowakei. Der Band enthalt sowohl Uberblicksbeitrage zur Buchuberlieferung einzelner Regionen bzw. bestimmter Stadtbuchtypen als auch beispielhafte Analysen des Stadtbuchfonds einzelner Stadte.
