This book is the reconstruction of a critical theory of modernity. 'The Theory of Modernity' is divided into four parts: freedom, equality, solidarity and responsibility. The first three follow the basic ideas of the constitutional revolutions of the 18th century.

Offering a contemporary perspective on the theory of modernity that differentiates it from its predecessors, this reconstruction has been expanded to include a fourth instrumental aspect. In addition to the recognition of the three parts of traditional modernity--freedom, equality, and solidarity--that follow the basic ideas of the constitutional revolutions of the 18th century, this updated vision introduces responsibility. Concerning itself with what the sociology of development, risk, and ecological crisis have added to these classical ideas, the addition of the fourth part, responsibility, seeks to recognize the experiences of successive eras, and the 20th century in particular.

Amidst rising tensions affecting democracy, capitalism and planetary life, this book discusses the multiple crises, processes and conflicts reconfiguring modernity. Tracking the political, social and ecological dynamics at play, it offers a critical perspective on the forces that may redefine the futures of political modernity.It asks whether a transition is unfolding and whether a new phase of modernity is emerging, or whether it is only an inflexion that we are witnessing, with the prepandemic imaginary and institutions retaining their strength, apart from smaller adaptions. Assessing critical theory today, Emancipation and History focuses on the connection between history and emancipation, centring on the trends that structure modernity and may lead us beyond it. Classical and contemporary sociology and social theory are mobilised to recover a robust theory capable of going beyond recurrent empirical, and therefore weaker, perspectives in emancipatory thought.

The book discusses so-called real socialism and offers an alternative conceptualization of it as authoritarian collectivism, making use of an analytical methodology, as well as dwelling on its genesis, development and demise.
