This book examines in an interdisciplinary and international comparative way structures of national identity which are in conflict with or supporting multi-ethnic diversity and trans-national connectivity. The book’s first section seeks to clarify the concepts of national identity, nationalism, patriotism and cosmopolitism and to operationalize them consistently. The next section regards the diversity within national states and the consequences for the management of identity and intra-national integration. The third section focuses on external integration between different nations by searching for the "squaring of the circle" between the bonding with co-patriots and the critical reflection of one's own national perspective in relation to others. The last section explores to what extent and in which ways media use shapes collective identity.

This book is the first collection of essays to explore the changing relationships between war, media and the public from a multidisciplinary perspective and over an extended historical period. It is also the first textbook for students in this field, discussing a wide range of theoretical concepts and methodological tools for analyzing the nature of these relationships. The book starts with a thorough overview by Philip Seib of war, the media and the public sphere. His chapter explores how the perception of war in the public sphere is influenced by the media and, more precisely, how the news media define and perform their social function in relation to war. It points to the fact that it is not only the way in which journalists deliver news about war to the public that affects how people think about war. Information and its impact on the public are also influenced, to a varying extent, by the medium that conveys the message. The impact of newspaper articles differs from that of a live television report from the battlefield, which in turn differs from an amateur’s YouTube video, not just in terms of production but also in terms of access and consumption. Obviously, changes in the media environment and its technologies affect the nature of news journalism, the role of professional communication and the way media messages are perceived by the public.

Wahlen sind Kulminationspunkte politischer Kommunikation. Dabei kommt in modernen Demokratien den Massenmedien zentrale Bedeutung zu. Durch Thematisierung und Interpretation tragen sie sowohl zur Strukturierung des Wahlkampfes als auch zur Definition des politischen Kräfteverhältnisses nach der Wahl bei. Aus kommunikations- und politikwissenschaftlicher Perspektive leisten die Beiträge des Bandes eine Diskussion des aktuellen Stands der Wahlkommunikationsforschung, thematisieren die zentralen Forschungsfelder und präsentieren jüngste Untersuchungsergebnisse im zeitlichen Spektrum vom Kaiserreich bis zur Bundestagswahl 1998. Über die Frage nach kurzfristigen Medienwirkungen hinaus liegt dabei der Schwerpunkt auf längerfristigen Analysen von Strukturen und Wandlungsprozessen. Der Band basiert auf einem von der Kommission für historische Pressedokumentation der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften gemeinsam mit dem Hans-Bredow-Institut für Rundfunk und Fernsehen, Hamburg, und dem Institut für Zeitungsforschung, Dortmund, im April 1998 in Wien veranstalteten Workshop.

Herzog spent most of her working life in the United States, where she moved to in the 1930s, following her first husband Paul Lazarsfeld into migration and working with him at the famous Office of Radio Research in Princeton and Columbia. The chapters by scholars from the U.S., Israel, Germany and Austria show the amazing scope of Herzog’s work as both, one of the founders of empirical communication research and the "grand dame" of market and motivation research. Herzog crossed many borders, moving from Europe to the U.S. and back again, stepping over disciplinary lines as well as restrictions by gender.
