As more and more work is being done in the name of the ever-growing field of study of literary representations of masculinities, it seems timely to not only review its development and main contributions to the larger field of masculinity studies, but also to look at its latest advances and new directions. These are precisely the two main aims of Masculinities and Literary Studies, which seeks to explore the conjunction between these two fields while exploring some of the latest developments and new directions resulting from such intersections. If much of the existing masculinity scholarship has traditionally been grounded in a specific discipline, this volume also seeks to provide an innovative methodological approach to the subject of literary masculinities by proving the applicability of the latest interdisciplinary masculinity scholarship - namely, sociology, social work, psychology, economics, political science, ecology, etc. - to the literary analysis, thus crossing the traditional boundary between the Social Sciences and the Humanities in new and profound ways. Presenting the latest advances in masculinity scholarship, this interdisciplinary book will appeal to gender and masculinity scholars from a wide variety of fields, including sociology and social work, psychology, philosophy, political science, and cultural and literary studies.

This book focuses on the construction of hegemonic masculinity as well as its representations in literature, culture, and film. Although white heterosexual masculinity continues to be the dominant model, it remains, paradoxically, largely invisible in gender terms. While the first three chapters thus offer introductory theoretical perspectives on the latest research on white masculinities, the following chapters concentrate on applying masculinity theory to the analysis of both social constructions and cultural (i.e. literary and film) representations of men’s emotions (with a special focus on new fatherhood models), friendships between men, as well as gender-based violence.

This handbook provides an overview of representations of masculinities in Anglophone literatures worldwide. While Part One provides an introduction to the complexities of exploring masculinities across nations, the next parts revolve around a select number of masculinity-related topics that recur across contemporary Anglophone literatures, ranging from violence(s) to boyhood and fatherhood, to aging, or to alternative models of being a man. Crossing traditional boundaries across different literary genres, the collection analyzes fiction but also poetry, drama, short stories, and film adaptations of literary texts. It also challenges the distinction between high- and low-brow culture by incorporating chapters on hard-boiled fiction or domestic noir. The handbook will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of gender studies, cultural and literary studies, and postcolonial theory, among others.
