This work brings together a collection of papers dealing with various aspects of crossborder secured transactions, an issue which is becoming increasingly important to the process of the development of emerging financial markets and transitional market economies. As most medium and long term loans are no longer secured by sovereign or governmental guarantees, lenders need to find security elsewhere. A sound legal framework for lenders to effect and enforce secured transactions is called for in order to establish an investor friendly climate. Special attention is paid to the EBRD Model Law on Secured Transactions, the (UNCITRAL) Draft Convention on Assignment in Receivables Financing and the pending International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) model. The editors have provided an invaluable service in bringing together these texts which make a significant contribution to the development of scholarship in this area and which emphasise the importance to the development and transition process of the development of a modern framework for secured transactions.

The Changing Nature of International Law in the Twenty-First Century draws together contributions of leading international legal scholars respecting major themes of the future of international law in the new century. The papers have been collected in honour of the late Professor Kenneth R. Simmonds, former Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and Professor of Law at Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London.
The book is divided into three parts: Public International Law, International Dispute Resolution, and European and Other Regional Integration, which constitute the important themes and currents in international law today and in the future. The sections also represent the areas that were of personal interest to Professor Simmonds and in which he was a leading contributor until his death.
This book will be of prime interest to international legal scholars or legal practitioners interested in the specific themes addressed within the volume.

Whereas arbitration and non-judicial dispute settlement mechanisms are of growing importance in international economic transactions, their present and future role in financial transactions is not yet fully explored.
This timely publication aims to fill this gap in the literature and includes analyses of bank remedies, direct negotiation and mediation in financial and business conflicts, debt renegotiations, restructuring of syndicated loans, arbitration in project financing, and the roles of the ICC, NAFTA and OAS. Some of the expert papers focus in particular on the role of arbitration and dispute resolution in Latin America, Greater China and Russia.
Non-Judicial Dispute Settlement in International Financial Transactions is based on the edited and revised papers of an international conference--part of a global series of conferences held in 1999 on the ''New International Financial Architecture''--organised by the Law Centre of European and International Cooperation (R.I.Z., Cologne), the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (London), the Asian Institute of International Financial Law (Hong Kong), and the SMU Institute of International Banking and Finance (Dallas).
