Ms tarde obtiene beca en el Instituto Pre-Universitario "Pablo de la Torriente Braw". Por su brillante expediente pasa a la Universidad "Antonio Maceo" de Santiago de Cuba. Pero el estudiante siente las contradicciones de la sociedad en que vive. La falta de libertad y el estado paternalista y obsesivamente personalista, oprimen su inteligencia y su propia naturaleza. Es elegido miembro de la Juventud Comunista. Rechaza el ofrecimiento y de inmediato es expulsado de la Universidad y enviado a la agricultura. Trata de entrar en la Universidad de La Habana. Pero se le niega el ingreso por el expediente politico. Desesperado. denuncia su situacion a la Federacion Estudiantil Universitaria (FEU). Y por esa denuncia ("diversionismo ideologico y actividades subversivas") Es encarcelado y condenado a treinta aos de privacion de libertad.
