The XXI International Congress of Roman Frontier studies was hosted by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums in Newcastle upon Tyne (Great Britain) in 2009, 60 years after the first Limeskongress organised in that city by Eric Birley in 1949. Sixty years on, delegates could reflect on how the Congress has grown and changed over six decades and could be heartened at the presence of so many young scholars and a variety of topics and avenues of research into the army and frontiers of the Roman empire that would not have been considered in 1949. This wide-ranging collection of papers enriches the study of Roman frontiers in all their aspects.

Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich die prähistorische Archäologie in vielen europäischen Staaten zu einer Ausgangsbasis nationaler Geschichtsschreibung. Allein sie konnte mit dem Rückgriff auf Bodenfunde ethnisch definierte Bevölkerungsgruppen weit in die Vergangenheit zurückverfolgen. Damit beteiligten sich Archäologen an der Legitimierung von Gebietsansprüchen in politischen Diskussionen. Bewirkten Interdependenzen zwischen Politik und Wissenschaft eine Politisierung der prähistorischen Archäologie? Welchen Einfluss hatten Archäologen auf die Politik, konnten Wissenschaftler die Festlegung nationaler Interessen beeinflussen? Diesen und anderen Fragen geht der vorliegende Band nach. Er berücksichtigt nicht nur die Zäsuren von 1933 und 1945, sondern nimmt erstmals auch die Übergänge zwischen den politischen Systemen in den Blick.
