After Luke intervenes, though, the locals simply ignore Byrde ... until he suddenly finds gold, and a pack of unscrupulous bandits take advantage of the poor idealist to establish a vegetarian dictatorship!

Travelling to the northern state of Wisconsin, Lucky Luke finds a population deeply depressed by a beer shortage that has caused all saloons in the area to close. Desperate, the inhabitants of New Munchen beg Luke to talk to the brewers of Milwaukee. But the cause of the shortage is a strike, and the cowboy is more used to chasing outlaws in the Great Plains than to forcing negotiations between unions and bosses in a city where the first skyscrapers are already sprouting...

Big surprise for the Lonesome Cowboy: a rich widow and admirer of his exploits has bequeathed him a 250 acre cotton plantation in Louisiana! Thrust into the role of a rich landowner, welcomed as one by his white neighbours, he will have to fight to gain the trust of his terrified black employees and split his heritage among them. A goal towards which he'll receive help from the local Cajun community, and from... the Daltons!

Lucky Luke tar en välförtjänt semester i den lugna lilla staden Nichevonada som kallas “den tystaste staden i hela Kansas.” Han tar en drink med vänner i saloonen när Daltons plötsligt dyker upp. I själva verket har Daltons just arresterats och ska föras till fängelset av den svarta sheriffen Bass Reeves, en riktig västerhjälte som har rykte att vara “den bästa sheriffen i västra Mississippi”. Vi får veta att den senare är en vän och mentor för Lucky Luke. När återföreningen ska firas anländer en advokat till saloonen och meddelar Lucky Luke att han har ärvt Pinkwater-plantagen och nu är en av de rikaste männen i Louisiana. Den fridfulla semestern är över …
