Was hält die kapitalistische Gesellschaft zusammen? Moralische Normen oder Regeln zweckmäßigen Handelns? Ist das Ganze normative Ordnung oder zweckloses Spiel? Diese Alternative spaltet die kritische Theorie und verhindert einen fruchtbaren Dialog zwischen französischer und deutscher Sozialphilosophie.Kritische Gesellschaftstheorie ist unmöglich, ohne Vertrauen in die sozialen Praktiken, die sie kritisiert. Ohne zu behaupten, dass jene Praktiken normative Ideale produzieren, anhand derer die Theorie sie kritisieren kann, kann sie ihrem Anspruch, immanente Kritik des Bestehenden zu sein, nicht gerecht werden. Seit Habermas sieht sich Adornos Sozialphilosophie dem Verdacht ausgesetzt, diesem Anspruch nicht gerecht werden zu können. Will man heute noch Adorno zu einem systematisch interessanten Philosophen machen, muss man zeigen können, dass auch für ihn die Philosophie – das "Wahre" im Ganzen – in konstitutiven sozialen Praktiken zu finden ist. Die Autorin rekonstruiert zunächst die Gesellschaftstheorie Adornos und zeigt dann auf, wie innerhalb einer so verfassten Gesellschaft noch deren Kritik möglich ist.
