Hip Preservation Techniques explores hip problems and presents and compares alternative protocols for treating the condition in children, adolescents, young adults, and adults. While poor long-term outcomes of arthroplasty have led to an increasing dependence on procedures to conserve the native hip, preservation surgery may maintain or protect a hip and prevent or delay the need for arthroplasty. Well-established techniques such as cartilage restoration and use of tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells are presented, and conceptually different procedures such as Bernese peri-acetabular osteotomy, Salter’s and Pemberton’s osteotomy are also discussed. This book will be useful for medical students, residents and consultants with an interest in hip preservation surgery.
Key Features
Explores the emerging concepts in hip preservation surgery with a concise and to-the-point approach
Discusses digital templating in total hip arthroplasty
Examines the anterior approach to the hip for a minimally invasive prosthesis
Offers a comprehensive coverage of the topic through beautiful illustrations

The Hip Joint, written in 2016, provides a detailed account of the hip joint''s anatomy and biomechanics and covers recent trends in orthopaedic surgery of the hip joint, including the latest advances in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA), computer-assisted navigation for THA, resurfacing of the hip joint and neoplastic conditions around the hip as well as indications, complications and outcomes of hip arthroscopy. Another book, The Hip Joint in Adults: Advances and Developments, gives additional important details of how hip joint surgery has evolved around the world. While much of the basic knowledge in this area is constant, it is critically important to stay current on those areas that do change.
This updated second edition of The Hip Joint contains a host of original articles from contributory authors all around the world, showing the evolution of the hip joint till the present day, building upon the solid foundation set by the first edition. It covers hot topics such as 3D printing in orthopaedics and traumatology, stem cell therapy in orthopaedics, hip resurfacing, hip-preserving surgery, sports medicine for the hip joint, robotic-assisted surgery in orthopaedics and neoplastic conditions around the hip.

This book discusses arthrology in general and of the upper and lower limbs specifically. It covers the examination of each joint of both limbs, considering their basic anatomy and physiology. It presents the various tests required for examining the joints and articulations and the systematic approaches that should be followed in cases of diagnosis of diseases and injuries related to them as well as in specific cases of disease and injuries. The book also defines special tests required in varied situations and mentions precautions that should be taken while examining patients of specific ages or work groups. To simplify the explanation and promote education, original photographs either documented during clinical examination of the foot and ankle or taken using models are used in this book. These photographs are from accomplished orthopedic surgeons and have not been documented anywhere before. In addition, some chapters showcase line diagrams, sketched to illustratively discuss the information being presented. The book will help readers understand the importance of this expanding sub-specialty in orthopedics and will be useful for orthopedic surgeons taking exams in different universities of the world as well as sub-speciality exams of each joint.

This book summarizes the lifetime work of Dr K. Mohan Iyer and is based on his research done at the University of Liverpool, UK, where he devised a "modified posterior approach to the hip joint" and has been following it from 1981 till today. The book discusses the anterior approach to the hip on a standard operating table, using a leg holder with a combined spinal anesthetic and general anesthetic. It studies total hip replacement as a day-case as an evolution in total hip replacement and presents the principles of anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty, including discussions on the choice of patients, superficial and deep dissection, and dedicated surgical instruments. It provides extensive details on the direct anterior approach (DAA) and shows how the DAA to the hip can be carried out on a plain table, which can be useful in countries in Asia, such as India, without the use of special operating tables and dedicated surgical instruments for the same. The book is helpful for the upcoming postgraduates in orthopedics anywhere in the world to be well versed in DAA to the hip joint.

Proponents of the direct anterior approach for hip replacement maintain that using an intermuscular plane to access the hip, without detaching any tendons, results in less trauma to the soft tissues and a quicker recovery from the procedure. The approach itself can be suitably modified to a minimally invasive technique using specialized instrumentation, which can benefit patients. Rapid initial recovery from surgery is high on the list of priorities for various healthcare systems, as this could potentially translate into a reduction in the average length of hospital stay for patients and the possibility of performing day-case hip replacement. In addition, it is proposed that the dislocation rate is lower with the direct anterior approach compared to the postero-lateral approach.
In 1981, Dr K. Mohan Iyer devised an approach to the hip joint—the modified posterior approach—with the help and guidance (cadaveric study) of biomedical engineer Dr Martin A. Elloy, who was attached to the University of Liverpool, UK. At that time, there were considerable reports of dislocation of the hip joints on which the conventional posterior approach, described by Moore, was used. Dr Iyer developed this new approach to confer greater stability to the hip joint posteriorly and minimize the incidence of dislocation. He has used the approach in all his surgeries for over 40 years now, and it has also been highly published. This book is a useful addition to the existing literature on the direct anterior approach to the hip joint as it presents the rationale and technical details of the approach and is of value to surgeons who perform surgery on the hip joint.

For centuries, orthopaedic surgeons have been managing the pain, limp, and gait disturbance that develop in association with various traumas and diseases of the hip joint. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint that has a good range of movement, but it is stable and rarely dislocates, even after high-impact trauma, and can withstand repeated motion and a fair amount of wear and tear. However, despite its durability, it is not indestructible. With age and use, the cartilage can wear down or become damaged. Overuse of muscles and tendons of the hip, for example, in athletes, leads to hip pain due to muscle strain or tendonitis. Other factors that can cause pain and lead to progressive arthritic changes include the abnormal anatomy a person is born with, conditions that develop during the growth and development of bones, and trauma as well as wear and tear due to ageing. The diagnosis and management of hip injuries have evolved substantially with advances in hip arthroscopy and diagnostic tools such as MRI and new, minimally invasive techniques.
This book provides a detailed account of the hip joint’s anatomy and biomechanics and serves as a practical guide for the diagnosis and treatment of hip diseases and injuries at all ages. The book covers recent trends in orthopaedic surgery of the hip joint, including the latest advances in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA), computer-assisted navigation for THA, resurfacing of the hip joint, neoplastic conditions around the hip, and indications, complications, and outcomes of hip arthroscopy. The chapters are written by experts who have contributed greatly to the understanding of problems of the hip joint. The book will be appreciated by undergraduate and postgraduate students, experienced hip surgeons, medical doctors, and practicing consultants in orthopaedics.
