"SPPARC" highlights the importance of working with partners in order to create real life change both for partners and for people with aphasia. "The SPPARC" pack consists of a manual, downloadable resources and provides: practical resources to run, support and conversation training programmes either for groups of partners or for the partner and the person with aphasia together as a couple; conversation assessment and treatment materials, photocopiable and printable (from the downloadable resources) activities and handouts, as well as an introduction to conversational analysis; and, downloadable resources with 27 extracts of everyday conversations between several people with aphasia and their partners, which can be used as a resource both for assessing everyday conversation and for facilitating change.Theoretically validated through the 'Coping with Communicating' research project from University College London, "SPPARC" goes beyond the theory and provides a complete resource of clinically effective tools to work with people with aphasia and their communication partners.

Research in semantics is conducted in a wide variety of disciplines, and the strength of this book is in bringing those areas together in one volume. Contributions come from an international group of applied researchers. Models of semantics are being influenced by research on the development of semantic processing in children, and by work on the disruption of semantic processing in brain damage such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Clinical work is benefiting from the application of theoretical models while pathological findings are crucial for testing and developing such models. The book has chapters on: models of semantic processing, connectionist modelling, sentence processing in children and adults, semantic processing in the normal elderly, semantic category disorders, semantic therapy in aphasia, semantic processing in Alzheimer’s disease, semantic dementia and conceptual semantics. The book is aimed primarily at the undergraduate reader although some chapters will be of interest to graduate and research students. Students of linguistics, psychology and speech and language sciences will find the book immensely useful.

Communication within the context of health and social care faces many challenges. Our understanding of how language and communication information is processed by the brain is increasing our awareness of the complexities involved and the influence of normal ageing on communication processing. Care systems are becoming more complex and service users demand more information and choice. At the same time, the range of service users encountered by practitioners includes more people with varied language backgrounds, and greater language and cultural diversity is occurring among health and social care staff. This volume explores current challenges to achieving effective communication in health and social care. It outlines how practitioners communicate, innovative methods for teaching communication skills, and methodologies to include children and people with communication difficulties in research and in consultation processes about healthcare. Particular communication issues, within the context of healthcare, for population groups such as older people, asylum seekers, young offenders and people with mental health problems are also addressed.
