This Modern Guide examines how to achieve inclusive and sustainable development in shrinking regions. Leading experts explore solutions for the socio-economic challenges in these areas while also re-thinking migration and integration policies.Chapters assess welcoming initiatives across Europe, evaluating how those that engage with migrant newcomers contribute to economic, political and social prosperity in their respective localities. Identifying factors that limit the success of welcoming initiatives, such as fragmentation and challenges in scaling support, contributors illustrate how progress is constrained beyond the local level. This Modern Guide highlights the need for new criteria to define community belonging, based on people’s contributions to their community rather than legal or normative assumptions of belonging. Analysing how migrant newcomers and long-term residents can integrate into a diverse and cohesive community, authors present methods for learning from comparison and scaling up initiatives.Innovative and timely, A Modern Guide to Migration and Spatial Justice in Europe is a crucial resource for students and scholars of geography, anthropology, sociology, politics and public policy, as well as urban and regional studies. Policymakers will also benefit from its insights into social justice action.

Policies in the EU are largely made by national civil servants who prepare and implement decisions in Brussels as well as at home. Despite their important role, these national civil servants form a relatively hidden world that has received little attention from both the media and academics. This volume considers a wide variety of sources and research methods to answer such questions as: how many civil servants are actually involved in EU-related activities? What do these civil servants do when they engage with the EU? And how do they negotiate their dual roles? The New Eurocrats offers unique and invaluable insights into these civil servants and their working practices-and uncovers some secrets in the world of EU governance along the way.

Public innovation is distinctive from private sector innovation by being set in a political system rather than a market. The roles of citizens and elected politicians as well as public servants and other stakeholders are frequently relevant. Public organizations can be creators, funders, orchestrators or sense-makers of innovations, which are carried out with the aim of benefitting society. This book provides a comprehensive insight into the theory and practice of public innovation using a wide range of research evidence about the processes, drivers and barriers, stakeholders and outcomes of innovation. Using the lens of public value, the book offers a stimulating discussion of how public innovation is valued and contested in current societies. Valuing Public Innovation aims to help develop a deeper understanding of innovation and how to use that knowledge in practical ways. This is essential reading for academics and students in the fields of innovation, organisation studies, public administration and public policy, as well as for policymakers and practitioners.
