Soziale Konflikte und Kontroversen um Mahnmale und zeitgenossische Aussenskulpturen werden anhand von Fallbeispielen untersucht, die eine Diskrepanz zwischen den mit einer Aufstellung verfolgten Wirkungsabsichten und den Interessen mobilisierter Bevolkerungsgruppen aufzeigen. Entscheidend fur das Vorgehen ist der in der Arbeit entwickelte Untersuchungsansatz, Kunst im Aussenraum als soziales Ereignis zu analysieren. Das Handeln der Akteure, die an der Aufstellung und Rezeption von Mahnmalen und zeitgenossischen Aussenskulpturen beteiligt sind, werden zum eigentlichen Untersuchungsgegenstand erklart. Wie und mit welchen Deutungen Konflikte um 'Kunst im Aussenraum' verhandelt werden und was dies uber gesellschaftliche Verhaltnisse aussagt, ist ausschlaggebend fur diese soziologische Studie.

Karin Schittenhelm untersucht den Statusübergang zwischen Schule und beruflicher Ausbildung anhand junger Frauen mit Migrationshintergrund und berücksichtigt dabei einen Vergleich mit einheimischen jungen Frauen. Theoretisch verbindet die Autorin Ansätze der soziokulturell orientierten Ungleichheitsforschung und der Wissenssoziologie, empirisch kombiniert sie qualitative Methoden.

Für Wissensgesellschaften, die vom Aufbau und der Verwertung kulturellen Kapitals abhängen, kann die Arbeitsmarktintegration von hochqualifizierten Migrant(inn)en eine Chance sein. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit verschiedenen Migrantengruppen, die ihre akademischen Bildungstitel in die Arbeitsmärkte von Deutschland, Kanada, Türkei und Großbritannien einbringen. Er rekonstruiert mit qualitativen Methoden die Bildungs- und Berufserfolge der Kinder von Migranten ebenso wie die Chancen und Risiken, mit denen Akademiker/innen konfrontiert sind, die z.B. aufgrund von Partnerschaften, Jobangeboten oder als Flüchtlinge in ein Land kommen. Die An- und Aberkennung von kulturellem Kapital, die Erfahrung von Diskriminierung, aber auch von sozialer Unterstützung gehen in den Lebensgeschichten der Migrant(inn)en komplexe Verbindungen ein, die über ihre erfolgreiche Arbeitsmarktintegration entscheiden.

Indem der Band Perspektiven und Methoden einer qualitativen Bildungs- und Arbeitsmarktforschung vorstellt, gibt er einen Einblick in ein mittlerweile breites Spektrum an methodischen Zugängen und deren methodologische Grundlagen sowie Anwendungsformen. Insgesamt berücksichtigt er frühe Ansätze und neuere Entwicklungen.
